San Francisco Considers Banning Sale of Pets Except Fish
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 7/8/10 | Carolyn Jones, Chronicle Staff Writer

Sell a guinea pig, go to jail.

That's the law under consideration by San Francisco's Commission of Animal Control and Welfare. If the commission approves the ordinance at its meeting tonight, San Francisco could soon have what is believed to be the country's first ban on the sale of all pets except fish.

That includes dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, rats, chinchillas, guinea pigs, birds, snakes, lizards and nearly every other critter, or, as the commission calls them, companion animals.

"People buy small animals all the time as an impulse buy, don't know what they're getting into, and the animals end up at the shelter and often are euthanized," said commission Chairwoman Sally Stephens. "That's what we'd like to stop."

San Francisco residents who want a pet would have to go to another city, adopt one from a shelter or rescue group, or find one through the classifieds.

“People buy small animals all the time as an impulse buy, don’t know what they’re getting into, and the animals end up at the shelter and often are euthanized,” said commission Chairwoman Sally Stephens. “That’s what we’d like to stop.”

People get married also on similar impulse. Maybe San Francisco could also ban marriage.

Whoops! That would pose a problem, because then they might have to ban also gay marriage. Oh well, since when has logic interfered with liberal schemes?

An open invitation to the Mexican cartels to start selling black market chihuahuas.

The sad part about it is, in this economy the pet owners are struggling to stay afloat anyway, and now this?

So they are not outlawing owning a pet, only that you can not buy it in the city.

I am glad to hear that all the other problems of the city have been resolved since they can not focus on putting yet anothe business, out of business. /s

I guess worrying about this new-age happy crap is easier than actually solving real problems in their city. And I would think those problems must be piling ever higher.

Another problem: people can still buy pets outside of San Francisco, so what happens when they bring the pet into town? Will they be stopped at the town line? Will they be forced to liberate the pet? Take it to a shelter? Euthanize it? Elect it to the City Council?

Clearly, the proposed law discriminates against fish. Or maybe discriminates against non-fish. Whatever!

Then how are bakeries supposed to find doves to put in traditional Italian wedding cakes?

If the problem is dogs and cats, why not address that in some way rather than banning the sale of all pets. This is really overkill.

How cruel.

Fish are people too.

(I guess.... I’m really unsure how to respond to the stupidity.)

There IS a legitimate problem with pet overpopulation. Obviously there is and always has been a need to control that population. This is why we have Dog Catchers.

The problem of course is that you are correct when you say, “If you own a pet store in Oakland - time to raise prices”. This law would be way too easily bypassed and it would simply put people out of work.

Spade and neuter folks (start with the people of San Francisco)!
