SACRAMENTO Sen. Barbara Boxer's popularity with Californians is falling as she finds herself in a statistical tie with her Republican challenger, former Hewlett-Packard Co. chief executive Carly Fiorina, according to a Field Poll released Thursday.
The survey found 47 percent of likely voters support Boxer while 44 percent back Fiorina, a gap that is within the poll's margin of error. The result is similar to the last Field Poll, taken in March. That survey showed Boxer with 45 percent support, compared with 44 percent for Fiorina.
Meanwhile, the senator's popularity has fallen. Just 41 percent of voters say they have a favorable image of the three-term incumbent, while 52 percent have an unfavorable image. Appraisals of the job Boxer is doing are now close to the lowest since she was first elected to the Senate in 1992, pollsters found.
Fiorina, a newcomer to politics, is challenging Boxer after beating two politicians in the Republican primary, former congressman Tom Campbell and state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore.
That contest does not appear to have badly damaged her image, according to the Field Poll. Would-be voters were more likely to rate their perception of her as favorable than unfavorable.

I don’t care if she is a RINO. The most important vote is for the majority leader. That’s what counts.
I doubt her chances, given ACORN operations, but miracles happen. At least GOP should be vigilant about voter fraud.
That is Senator to you peasant!
Good riddance to trash.
Who will be the first to address her as ‘Failed Senator’.
The Field poll samples counties based on population not the number of voters. So liberal counties with large cities are over represented. They’ve done it that way for several decades. Ultimately if Field says it’s a tie in any race, then the Republican is probably ahead by 4-6 points.
Love to see Boxer tossed out.
First Fiorina is NOT a RINO. Sarah Palin said so.
Secondly this is a good result in that it shows Boxer is vulnerable but Fiorina still has work to do to make the sale.
And third it should at least get the anti-Fiorina crowd to admit at least temporarily to admit that she is not a disaster and that Palin’s choice of endorsing her was not out of left field as some have made it out to be.
That high maintenance lefty losing would really make my day.
But the Obozo was out here several times fundraising and rallying support for that idiot Boxer. What?! No big increase in the moron’s popularity from that?
Wow! FR has certainly gone to ......................
Hoping for the win, but it’s a victory of sorts already in that the DNC will have to spend money there.
For those who call Fiorina a RINO, can anyone give us a rundown of where she stands on most important issues ?
That’s the only way we can all decide one way or the other...
Boxer lacks the intelligence for the job. She should be retired.
She should be in handcuffs.
She should be in handcuffs.
There will be 4 votes for Fiorina from our household. Boxer has to go.
RINO or Boxer?
I’ll choose RIMO
Yeah, yeah, that’s what’s wrong with this country, etc, but you have to make the bet based on what you’re dealt.
I voted for DeVore, I’ll vote RINO.
