Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis has been picked to take over U.S. Central Command, the Pentagon announced on Thursday.
Mattis would replace Gen. David Petraeus, who is now in Afghanistan as the U.S. and NATO's top military officer there.
The shake-up comes as the American public questions whether the fight in Afghanistan can be won, and the Defense Department is reeling from losing its top war commander -- Gen. Stanley McChrystal.

Lamh Foistenach Abu!
Nothing yet on the Defense.gov announcing this.
Ok, next question:
Who gets JFCOM?
Lamh Foistenach Abu!
No way this side of God’s green earth that Mathis should be over Petraeus.
Mattis is a hardass (absolutely no politically correct weenie) and a GREAT choice for CENTCOM, so long as he has some room to operate and doesn’t end up neutered by the regime. I LIKE that attitude about the enemy.
Gen. Odierno.

Thanks, it soon will be up on FRWN
“Gen. Odierno.”
That would be most interesting......
HIs Corps bio -
Gen. Mattis has commanded at multiple levels. As a lieutenant, he served as a rifle and
weapons platoon commander in the 3rd Marine Division. As a captain, he commanded a rifle
company and a weapons company in the 1st Marine Brigade.
As a major, he commanded Recruiting Station Portland. As a lieutenant colonel, he
commanded 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, one of Task Force Ripper’s assault battalions in
Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. As a colonel, he commanded 7th Marines
(Reinforced).
Upon becoming a brigadier general, he commanded first the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade
and then Task Force 58, during Operation Enduring Freedom in southern Afghanistan. As a
major general, he commanded the 1st Marine Division during the initial attack and subsequent
stability operations in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In his first tour as a lieutenant general, he commanded the Marine Corps Combat
Development Command and served as the deputy commandant for combat development.
Most recently, he commanded the I Marine Expeditionary Force and served as the
commander of U.S. Marine Forces Central Command.
From 2007-09, he served as both NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Transformation and
commander, USJFCOM.
Gen. Mattis, a native of the Pacific Northwest, graduated from Central Washington State
University in 1972. He is also a graduate of the Amphibious Warfare School, Marine Corps
Command and Staff College, and the National War College.
This guy is the real deal - some fun quotes
“I come in peace. I didnt bring artillery. But Im pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you fuck with me, Ill kill you all.”
as excerpted in Armed Forces Journal (August 2006)
and another fun quote
“It’s the mission of every Marine in this Battalion to send one dead Iraqi home to Mama.”
Speech before Task Force Ripper offensive to recapture Kuwait during Desert Storm.
Be interesting to see how the “Regular Army” brasshats deal with this General....
Well, Mattis finally gets his reward for throwing the Haditha marines under the bus. There’s absolutely no question about his ability - he’s one of the best of the best. Too bad about the price he paid to get there.

I agree. Mattis is the closest I’ve seen of a U.S. general with the temperment of Patton. My former boss recalled when Mattis dismounted his vehicle and lead a squad-sized assualt on Iraqi positions when Enduring Freedom kicked off.
He is harder than woodpecker lips.
As mentioned before, it will be very interesting how the Pentagon deals with him.
I think the biggest thing he has going for him is that CinC doesn't give a flip about the military or the WOT and might give a lot of latitude to someone that keeps war news from interferring with his domestic agenda.
Public censure
A major general and two colonels have been censured for not probing the Haditha killings, the Marine Corps said yesterday. A public censure:
Is the most serious of all Marine administrative punishments.
Cannot be appealed.
Is highly unusual, particularly for senior officers.
Virtually assures that the affected service member will never be promoted and could lead to a demotion and early retirement.
The censure letters were recommended by Lt. Gen. James Mattis, commander of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton. Mattis is overseeing criminal proceedings against two Haditha defendants charged with murder and three others charged with dereliction of duty.
We shall see if this Marine helps get rid of these assine ROEs or not. THAT IS THE QUESTION.
