What Does an Exalted Cyclops Do?
Slate ^ | June 30, 2010 | Brian Palmer

Robert Byrd, the longest-serving senator in U.S. history, (died Monday) at 92. While he was most famous as a master of the Senate's obscure rules, Byrd wore many hats during his lifetime, including that of (Exalted Cyclops)

in the Ku Klux Klan. What are the job responsibilities of an Exalted Cyclops?

He presides over the Council of the Centaurs and writes quarterly reports to the Grand Giant. In the Klan hierarchy, each local chapter, or Klavern, is led by an Exalted Cyclops. This member is typically elected by his fellow Klansmen and serves a one-year term. According to the original (1867 Prescript of the Ku Klun Klan) the Exalted Cyclops reports to a Grand Giant, or provincial leader; a Grand Dragon, or state director; and the Grand Wizard, or national chair. Below the Cyclops on the org chart were the Grand Magi, the Grand Monk, the Grand Exchequer, the Grand Turk, and, finally, the rank-and-file members known as Ghouls or Knights. (Many of these titles have changed over time, and most of the sub-Cyclops ranks have been eliminated.) The Exalted Cyclops' responsibilities include presiding over Klavern meetings, initiating new members, and appointing Councils of Centaurs—that's Klan-speak for a jury—to try and punish wayward Ghouls.

Contrary to Bill Clinton's folksy excuse of Robert Byrds KKK experience, the old Senator was an old and powerful figure in that organization. Once more we have been spun misinformation about a politician that should have been expunged for the United States Senate many years ago....but then he was a democrat, a person allowed to deface our government, our country, and our values....democrats are like that.

Interesting information about the nomenclature used by the KKK.

Sounds like something made up by an inmate of a mental ward who had a penchant for Sci-fi and horror movies.

According to the Washington Post, Byrd was also a "Kleagle" (recruiter) for the KKK.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

"In the early 1940s, Byrd recruited 150 of his friends and associates to create a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.[10] According to Byrd, a Klan official told him, "You have a talent for leadership, Bob ... The country needs young men like you in the leadership of the nation." Byrd later recalled, "suddenly lights flashed in my mind! Someone important had recognized my abilities! I was only 23 or 24 years old, and the thought of a political career had never really hit me. But strike me that night, it did."[10] Byrd held the titles Kleagle (recruiter) and Exalted Cyclops.[10] When it came time to elect the "Exalted Cyclops," the top officer in the local Klan unit, Byrd won unanimously.[10]"

It is indeed. It's the 'mental ward' of Slate magazine, attempting to downplay Robert 'Sheets/Pork/KKK' Byrd's "Life in the Klan" through pitiful racist humor.

Just remember what happened when the name "Strom Thurmond" came up.

From the Washington Post:

"Byrd said in the Dec. 11, 1945, letter -- which would not become public for 42 more years with the publication of a book on blacks in the military during World War II by author Graham Smith -- that he would never fight in the armed forces "with a Negro by my side." Byrd added that, "Rather I should die a thousand times, and see old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.."..."

"during the general election campaign, Byrd's GOP opponent uncovered a letter Byrd had handwritten to Green, the KKK Imperial Wizard, recommending a friend as a Kleagle and urging promotion of the Klan throughout the country. The letter was dated 1946 -- long after the time Byrd claimed he had lost interest in the Klan. "The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia," Byrd wrote, according to newspaper accounts of that period. Byrd makes no mention of the letter in his new book."

In the early 1940s, Byrd recruited 150 of his friends and associates to create a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.

That should give you an idea of the depths of his commitment. It's hard to recruit 150 people to drink free beer.

What about having that many ‘friends and associates’ (150) willing to join the KKK?

It doesn’t matter what he did as a Cyclops or a Kleagle he was a member of a racist group that committed terrorist acts from it’s inception. His rise from a line member to a position of responsibility is even more proof of his commitment.

By definition the KKK was set up as the terrorist arm of the democrat party and has performed those duties up through my lifetime.

On a dark and stormy night "drunk" the 1920 DNC devised a plan to devise an organization so humorous it would unseat the Chinese Fire Drill as the funnyist bromide in the American culture..

The KKK was the result... and Americans have been laughing ever since..
Worthy of a future Mel Brooks movie.. dark humor only Americans could produce.. Grand Klegal?, GOULS?, Exalted Cylops?... Mel Brooks I think MISSED "the BIG ONE"...

Anyone out there willing to make a "classic movie"?..

One would imagine it would involve things that don’t require a lot of depth perception.

Bill Clintoon said Democrats are KKK members. He said Byrd HAD to join the KKK in order to get elected.
