Oh brother, I've got a degree in Medieval History, and I'm not that hard over. I've spent a fair amount of time touring historical sites and its nice to keep a part of our history preserved. That said, I stand by my original statement that it is a blessing and not a curse that the vast majority of our past is not preserved for the sake of preservation. It is more important that we remain a living society than a stale one.
Like other old houses, this one might have been best preserved by having people live in it. In historical preservation, the perfect becomes the enemy of the good.
