Feb. 2009: Sen. Robert Byrd doffs his hat for reporters as he arrives at the Capitol in Washington.
Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, the longest-serving senator in American history, died Monday at the age of 92, a spokesman for the family said.
Byrd, a Democrat who served in the U.S. Senate since 1959, had been plagued by health problems in recent years and was confined to a wheelchair. He had skipped several votes in Congress in the past months.
Jesse Jacobs, a family spokesman, said Byrd died peacefully at about 3 a.m. at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Va.
He was the oldest member of the 111th Congress.
The passing of Sen. Byrd will not affect the balance of power in the Senate. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, a Democrat, will appoint a replacement senator to serve out the remainder of Byrd's term which ends in 2012.
His grave’s eternal flame should be in the form of a burning cross.
“So in your viewpoint, Hitler was the man that God intended him to be?”
Yes, I do. I can’t imagine God having someone appear before him and His saying, “When I made you I had such high hopes, but you fell far short of what I wanted, so I’m going to punish you forever.” That sounds too much like a failure of God to own up to his own shortcomings as the creator.
As far as Hitler goes, there was nothing particularly evil about him, compared to many of the ruffians and assorted racists hooligans that you meet every now and then. The harm came from the willingness of the German people to embrace his view of the world, and wholeheartedly carry out his most terrible policies. Without tens of millions of Germans behind him, Hitler would have been inconsequential. They were as guilty as him.
BTW, Byrd died a long time ago IMHO.This was just the final physical phase.
Interesting how the big gun Dems like Kennedy and Byrd are falling in tandem. They have caused tremendous suffering in some individuals and areas of the nation.I would be disingenuous if I said I did not hope the trend continues.
WHY is speaking the truth, speaking evil???
I think Shelley Capito would disagree. She is MY REPUBLICAN, semi-conservative (daughter of Arch Moore - look him up yourself). The first WV district stands to gain an R, in this election, and Shelley is immensely popular. She could be the Byrd replacement candidate. The 3rd district guy has a tougher ride with Maynard against Rayhall.
Maynard, Capito, McKinley
I remember the same thing. Byrd was part of the Dem media damage cotrol solace team that included Madelin Albright.
May God be with and comfort his family.
>>From what I understand, because Byrd died before July 3, the person the governor appoints will have to run in a special election in November. If Byrd had died after July 3, the person would serve out Byrds term until 2012.
At least until the Rats in WV change the law to require a special election only if the governor is a republican, but allowing Rat governors to appoint senators for life. Just like when Kennedy died...
Thanks for saying that right up front, Recovering.
He will lie in state at the Robert C. Byrd Funeral Home. Go over the Robert C. Byrd bridge, turn left onto the Robert C. Byrd Freeway until you get to the Robert C. Byrd exit and proceed left past the Robert C. Byrd courthouse till you arrive at the Robert C. Byrd Shell station and turn left on Robert C. Byrd street. Go about a 1/4 mile, it’s on the left.
;-)
LOL!
West Virginia is ( along with Montana and North Dakota), one of the few states in this Union with a budget surplus ( that was from TIME Magazine ). Arkansas is just about balanced ( even ). The rest of the other states in this country have deficits.
Capito does not hold a state-wide office.(she’s my Rep. also)
Maynard, a life-long RAT, switched parties just last Nov. He is an opportunist, nothing more. He does have name recognition. I see little benefit for the right should he defeat Rahall.
IMO, Oliverio will win the 1st.
So instead, you think God creates evil people, then punishes them for being evil?
Here is an interesting question: Will Hussein Obama attend the funeral of an ex KKK member?
Do you remember a few months before that one Orrin G. Hatch of UT “begging” Clinton to “come clean”?
