the local Al Qaeda group is considered by ma-ny to be unassailable in the Sahara

The B-52s could never carpet bomb them there.

Islam is at war with the world and the world don’t know it.

Militants linked to Al Qaeda are building fortified bun-kers in the Algeria and Mali areas of the Sahara desert to shelter militants from air attacks,

Like that will protect them from a JDAM hit LOL

I hope they are that stu-pid.

Perfect! Bunkers are the ideal thing for Al Qaeda, it’s exactly what we want. Get them all together in one central location, and we suddenly have a new test target to evaluate the operation of the bunker busters!

So nice of them to volunteer to be test subjects...

That's nice, but what's the point of hiding out in a wasteland? You cannot kill and maim with no infidels around.

I think they would be very surprised if the surface above their bunkers was fused to glass...

In my Travel Medicine practice, I have seen a number of very healthy young men with short haircuts and Ray-Bans with a sudden interest in travel for an extended period to Northern Niger and Mali.

It's curious that they come to me - obviously they are not traveling on orders - perhaps they are going for the waters?

If bunkers didn’t work for the Japs 60+ years ago, how they gonna work for you now, Achmed?

I have trouble believing they would be so stupid. If they are in the desert, with no civilian area surrounding them, then there is no limit to what we could do to them without worry of collateral damage.

Al Qaeda was originally formed as an anti Saudi movement. They hate the Saudi kingship over Mecca.

The Arabs will kill them long before we have time to get there. This is probably the point of this public article.

“Terrorism: Al-Qaeda ‘building bunkers’ in the Sahara”

SNIPPET: “Timbuctu, 24 June (AKI) - Militants linked to Al-Qaeda are building fortified bunkers in the Sahara desert of Algeria and Mali to shelter militants from air attacks, security experts have claimed. The members of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb have hidden themselves in the desert without any notion of national boundaries, according to the experts.

“We have different verifiable reports which enable us to state that AQIM is currently in the process of building shelters, or bunkers, in which to hide against attacks in the desert shared by Mali and Algeria,” a Malian source told the news site, Middle East Online.”

SNIPPET: “Experts stress that aircraft are vital to track them down and attack them.”

SNIPPET: “Hamed Maiga said the fighters had already laid minefields around their desert hideouts to guard against assaults overland.”

Warden Message: Segou (Mali) Kidnapping Threat
CONSULAR AFFAIRS BULLETINS
Sub-Saharan Africa - Mali
13 Aug 2010

U.S. Embassy Bamako released the following Warden Message on August 13, 2010:

The U.S. Embassy in Bamako is issuing this Warden Message to warn U.S. citizens of reports of a kidnapping threat against Westerners in Segou from the Islamic extremist group Al-Qaeda in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). Accordingly, the Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens defer non-essential travel to Segou.

U.S. citizens who are currently in Segou should maintain good personal security practices and remain aware of their surroundings at all times, including always locking their homes and cars, varying routes and time of travel, and avoiding drawing attention to themselves. When going out, they should avoid being part of large, highly visible groups of Westerners, and should be particularly alert when frequenting locales associated with Westerners.
