Breaking: General Stanley McChrystal tenders his resignation

A senior Capitol Hill source tells me that General Stanley McChrystal had tendered his resignation to President Barack Obama and that the White House is actively discussing a replacement who could be quickly confirmed by the Senate.

The source said that among the names being touted as possible successors are General James Mattis, the outgoing head of the US Joint Forces Command and due to retire after being passed over as US Marine Corps commander, and Lieutenant General William Caldwell, commander of Nato’s Training Mission in Afghanistan.

Of course, offering to resign is not the same as actually resigning and it remains to be seen whether Mr Obama will accept the resignation.

McCain would be much better. He is a patriot which is one important quality Urkle does not have. And he is not a socialist.

Why can’t Obama celebrate diversity and appoint Putin? They would at least get someone smart, competent, ruthless and philosophically agreeable with Obama.

You can bet..Obama is thinking..this.

You can almost bet O is thinking this, but if there is a bright and qualified black candidate these circumstances will totally ruin that officer. Worse if it is a Latino woman colonel..............

I agree. I, too, think it was calculated. But what is your theory as to why?

Remember, the Rats are not a unified force. Just because there's a schism with Obama, doesn't mean everything is going start erupting all conservative everywhere.

In fact, now's just about the time soon to be "former" Obama people are starting to bail on him because he's "too extreme" and they want to pursue a more "centrist vision" for the Democrat Party.

Hmmm, now who ran on that plank, in a bitter, national civil war battle for the presidentcy that came down to the wire? What was her name? And is it even remotely possible she might be skulking around the fringes getting ready to punce again, and people are getting ready to support her?

Nah, nobody is that cloak-and-dagger to prepare far in advance through all sorts of powerful government, media and military cutouts - right? That would be nuts - positively tinfoil!

Yes, and MacCarthur was the right one! North Korea is a testiment to that fact! Truman should have been impeached for entering a conflict without the resolve to finish it! And now Obama is screwing around and not finishing the damn job in Afgahnistan. We need to christianize them as much as possible so the real decent people can take over from the muslim loonies.

All three and four star assignments require senate confirmation, including retirement.

He has spoken out in the past, and Obama has had a talk with him. He gave that speech in London, and then met with Obama on plane in Copenhagen.

Well, hang on a second...It has been said the general voted for Obama, which probably made for some interesting conflicts of interest...

So this is actually kind surprising to me, initially...

It appears the Obama mistique is crumbling in all aspects...

The elected leader of this country cannot hold it together anymore...

And we are going to be left to have to clean this frappin’ mess up, that he has made worse...

We might not be able to “completely” do that either...

I think we are in big time trouble now, across all aspects of the social, economic and political spectrum...

That fuse, that is already lit, is moving faster towards that powder keg...

Well, that is the correct thing to do.

In the military, you don’t violate the chain of command like that.

“I’ve never, in 26 years of Military Service, ever, heard a General Officer, speak off the cuff.”

Attaining the rank of general requires a great deal of political aptitude. Becoming a 4 star even more so.

I agree, this was planned to embarrass BO and make a statement to the nation.

From the Rolling Stone’ article, McChrystal entered West Point in ‘72, and then became a regimental commander in ‘86. Reads pretty fast-tracked to me.
