As the increasingly bitter U.S. Senate race in Utah between Tea Party candidates Mike Lee and Tim Bridgewater geared up for Tuesday's GOP primary, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S. Carolina) issued a strongly-worded rebuke of Bridgewater for mailing out a "disgraceful lie" about DeMint and the state of South Carolina.
The last-minute mailer suggested Lee and DeMint planned to dump 4,000 tons of South Carolina's nuclear waste in Utah if Lee becomes Utah's next senator, replacing Sen. Bob Bennett, who was rejected by delegates at the Republican state convention May 8.
"Can we gamble Utah's future with Mike Lee and Jim DeMint?" the mailer asked recipients.
The mailer also criticized Lee for being endorsed by DeMint's Senate Conservatives Fund, which has backed Lee with funding and an Internet presence.
DeMint, considered one of the most conservative members of the Senate, responded:
"Mr. Bridgewater's malicious and dishonest attacks on me and the state of South Carolina only confirm he would fit in all too well with the Washington establishment" (emphasis in the original).
DeMint added, "As you know, the Senate Conservatives Fund focuses on promoting principled conservative candidates, not attacking their Republican opponents. But if Mr. Bridgewater is going to spread lies about us and our support for Mike Lee, we're going to correct the record."
The senator continued:
"This race is still close because of attacks like these and because Mr. Bridgewater is self-funding his campaign with money made from businesses that are directly subsidized by government programs."
"He's been telling voters that he's a businessman but as someone who ran a small business for over twenty years, I can tell you that gaming government programs does not make you a businessman. It makes you a lobbyist," DeMint said.
You tell ‘em, Senator! And is it really “S. Carolina’s nuclear waste”? I think that it is waste that has been collected from many sources over the years and is sitting there in above ground storage awaiting transport to the nation’s nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain which the American rate payers have paid for for generation through excise taxes on their heating and cooling bills.
I’d say that it is Harry Reid’s nuclear waste since he’s the one who refuses it to be stored at Yucca Mountain where it belongs. Harry Reid was happy to take the government money and the jobs for Nevada right up until it was time to accept the waste. What part of contract doesn’t he understand?
In every good lie, there is a grain of truth..
“The tiny Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indians Reservation in Utah is targeted for a very big nuclear waste dump. Private Fuel Storage (PFS), a limited liability corporation representing eight powerful nuclear utilities, wants to “temporarily” store 40,000 tons of commercial high-level radioactive waste (nearly the total amount that presently exists in the U.S.) next to the two-dozen tribal members who live on the small reservation...” The Indians welcome the money BTW - too close to NV for a casino to work I guess.
As always, you may wish to learn more about the issue by doing research on your won, rather than count on a biased Press.
BTW - could care less about local political infighting in UT, I don’t vote there.
As I suspected since I heard both Lee and Bridgewater on Glenn Beck’s radio show yesterday. Bridgewater is a typical REPUBLICAN. No wonder DeMint endorsed Lee! Utah, you’ll do yourselves and ALL of us a favor by choosing Mike Lee and NOT Tim Bridgewater. Bridgewater speaks with forked tongue. And as a SOuth Carolinian, Mr. Bridgewater should tread lightly when talking about our State, or our honorable Senator, Jim DeMint. (You all can say anything you want about the other guy, Grahamnesty...)
Go Mike Lee.
And Jim DeMint is connected to the tribe?
Don’t know, don’t care.
The attack was about a supposed conection to the nuke waste.
My point - that there had been a try to put high-level nuke waste into Utah. Once you can leverage a fact with a lie, it has a bigger impact.
I did NOT say anything about demint. Please don’t try to put words in my postings.
I’m not putting words in your mouth. I asked you a question.
“What part of contract doesnt he understand?”
The part where he doesn’t get bribed.
