ORLANDO -- Is it too soon to name a road after President Barack Obama? A new road being built through Orlando will have his name.
Roads in Orlando honor some of our greatest presidents, from Washington to Jefferson and now Obama.
On Friday, Orlando leaders made President Barack Obama Parkway the first road under construction in the nation named after our 44th president, and surely one of the few in history to be named after a sitting president in his first term.
"I think its great if people want to support their presidential candidate, but I think it's a little soon," said Orlando resident Karey Graham.
"You don't have to be dead to be honored," said Charles Sledge from Orlando. We need to honor people while they are living."
City leaders actually voted on the name shortly after the groundbreaking election, when they decided they wanted to break ground on a north-south connection from Conroy Road to Old Winter Garden Road.
While some might find the name controversial, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said the benefits of the road are undeniable.
"Building these reliever roads is important for people being able to get to work or home and being able to save 10 minutes they can spend with their families. In this particular area John Young (Parkway), Kirkman (Road), I-4 always have congestion," Dyer said.
With the lack of north-south roads, people turn to these residential neighborhoods, sometimes causing even more problems. Two hundred jobs will be created to build the first $10.5 million phase of the road, which will connect with Metrowest Boulevard.
As for the timetable on the rest of the construction, and what will spring up around the new road, it's still about as uncertain as the legacy the Obama Administration will leave behind.
However, Commissioner Samuel Ings, who came up with the name for the road, knows what he'd like to see.
"One of my dreams would be when we get ready to cut the ribbon that our president, presidential limo and seal would be the first to travel along Presidential Barack Obama Parkway," Ings said.
So far Obama hasn't been contacted.
The Gulf ... where else?
I’m in Orlando and this road is not in the prime part of town. Let’s just say it is surrounded by Obama voters.
Obama Road: Only left-hand turns allowed
We already tried that road, it leads to disaster and destruction, who wants to purposely drive to Hell?
The Sotero Bypass
Wetback Way
Muslim Merge Lane
Barack'O Overpass
Michelle Obama Porkway
Road To nowhere
Dead End Drive
.
*ouch*
We need an Interstate 0 sign.
Who will have the honor of the first persons to be mugged, murdered, arrested for drugs, etc.?
Is this a road to nowhere? ;)
The 1st road in America to be named for Obama.... and it comes with its own built-in potholes!
I like the gushing oil platform icon on each sign.
How about calling it “The Road To Oblivion” or “The Road To Nowhere”, “Communist Freeway” “Welfare Hiway” I can probably come up with a dozen more.
Gee...wonder why not?
I see plenty of obama shirts here that people can wear to honor him:

It could be on the downlow blvd.
