Democrats and liberal bloggers continue to search for surprising facts about Tea Party-backed Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle, but the Associated Press has uncovered one fact the left may not have anticipated: Angle was once a registered Democrat and worked to elect a Democratic politician in Nevada.
Rather than giving any indication of her ideological beliefs, however, that fact may simply show her history of independence from the Republican party. In the 1990's, she belonged to a conservative third party. Angle won the Nevada GOP Senate primary this month, knocking out the establishment candidate to take on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
While Angle alluded to conservative hero President Ronald Reagan the night she won the primary, she in fact was a registered Democrat during part of his presidency. Records show, the AP reports, that Angle was a registered Republican until 1984, when she switched to the Democratic party. She stayed a Democrat at least through March, 1988.
Campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy told the AP Angle switched parties to work for a conservative Democrat running for state Senate, but she voted for Reagan in both 1980 and 1984.
"She's always been conservative," Stacy said. "She switched parties to help run the (Democrat's) campaign."
In 1992, Angle helped resurrect the Independent American Party, the Wall Street Journal reported. The party reportedly favors low taxes and opposes gun control, illegal immigration, abortion, gay rights and "global government." Angle rejoined the Republicans in 1997.
The candidate in Washington this week to meet with Republican Party officials and conservative activists, but she has taken some heat for avoiding reporters.
National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) said that within weeks, reporters will have "complete, 100 percent access" to Angle, the Washington Post reports.
"I think she needs to get staffed up and prepared," he said. "The kind of scrutiny candidates undergo in a general-election race like this is far different than virtually anybody's been through before, and I just think it's a matter of due diligence and being prepared."
Despicable tactic
Did Hillary Clinton work for Goldwater?
"..Hillary Clinton ("Living History," page 21): I was also an active Young Republican and, later, a Goldwater girl, right down to my cowgirl outfit and straw cowboy hat emblazoned with the slogan "AuH20." ... I liked Senator Goldwater because he was a rugged individualist who swam against the political tide...."
Who cares?
I, too was once a registered Democrat. Jimmy Carter quickly cured me of that.
Truly conservative Dems still existed in the ‘80s. I do have some reservations about Angle, but I think you’re pissing in the wind on this thread...this is NOT what will cause her problems.
(posted before reviewing to see how many others have said this)
Ronald Reagan was once a registered democrat.
Amen, I voted for Hubert Humphrey~we all grow up, or at least some of us!
I was once a registered Democrat, too. I campaigned for Jimmy Carter, proudly pulled the lever for him as my first presidential vote, and delivered precinct ballots to the Waco courthouse after voting ended.
I got better.
A Conservative Democrat is an oxymoronIt is now.
In the 80's (the time period we're discussing here) when they elected Reagan in 2 landslides, they were called Southern Democrats...It was in all the papers.
I worked at Reagan’s headquarters when he first ran for Gov.
Have followed politics and world affairs since the late 1950s
On drugs?
The American Independant party was the only conservative party in the country in the early ‘90s.
“I even voted for a Democrat once for School Superintendant.”
You should have known better than that; most educators are flaming liberals trying to indoctrinate our kids.
Seriously, most people above the age of 50 who are conservatives have voted for a Democrat at one time or another. I was a strong supporter of John Connally when he ran for Gov. of Texas over Smilin’ Ralph Yarborough and the GOP candidate Jack Cox. Of course, that was when there were some legitimate Demo conservatives in TX.
That attack dog won’t hunt!
“Reids got a lot of little helpers here.”
.
Apparently, and some of them surprise me a bit.
.
She’s got a long way to go to catch up with Obama in the unraveling department.
Go ahead and dig away!!
Turncoat!
Hummm, so?
So was I. At first, I had lots of fun infiltrating local Rat assemblies and functions. Then I was too lazy to change it. But finally the ignominy of being a registered Rat was to great to stomach and I filled out the form to change from a dirty Rat to a gleaming Pub. Have felt better about myself every since.
I think I must have been a DINO.... non-active, unregistered, and a long time ago. I believe “transformed liberals” have some extra insight into the hypocrisies of the democrat party. As the saying goes, “A conservative is a liberal who realizes he’s been mugged.”
“Wow, its been a week ans shes starting to unravel. Fast than I would have thought. A lousy candidate.”

The Dems are pulling out all the stop to try to save Harry Reid’s sorry butt, and you’re helping them by slamming Angle. Are you a seminar Freeper?
