Democrats and liberal bloggers continue to search for surprising facts about Tea Party-backed Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle, but the Associated Press has uncovered one fact the left may not have anticipated: Angle was once a registered Democrat and worked to elect a Democratic politician in Nevada.
Rather than giving any indication of her ideological beliefs, however, that fact may simply show her history of independence from the Republican party. In the 1990's, she belonged to a conservative third party. Angle won the Nevada GOP Senate primary this month, knocking out the establishment candidate to take on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
While Angle alluded to conservative hero President Ronald Reagan the night she won the primary, she in fact was a registered Democrat during part of his presidency. Records show, the AP reports, that Angle was a registered Republican until 1984, when she switched to the Democratic party. She stayed a Democrat at least through March, 1988.
Campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy told the AP Angle switched parties to work for a conservative Democrat running for state Senate, but she voted for Reagan in both 1980 and 1984.
"She's always been conservative," Stacy said. "She switched parties to help run the (Democrat's) campaign."
In 1992, Angle helped resurrect the Independent American Party, the Wall Street Journal reported. The party reportedly favors low taxes and opposes gun control, illegal immigration, abortion, gay rights and "global government." Angle rejoined the Republicans in 1997.
The candidate in Washington this week to meet with Republican Party officials and conservative activists, but she has taken some heat for avoiding reporters.
National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) said that within weeks, reporters will have "complete, 100 percent access" to Angle, the Washington Post reports.
"I think she needs to get staffed up and prepared," he said. "The kind of scrutiny candidates undergo in a general-election race like this is far different than virtually anybody's been through before, and I just think it's a matter of due diligence and being prepared."
Thanks
So, giving the Dems a majority in the 'upper' house is fine with you? The battle is Angle versus Reid with the Senate at stake. Not exactly time to get all preachy and uppity about something she did over two decades ago.
So was Ronald Reagan.
To the article - I say ‘SO WHAT’? I voted for LBJ when I was 18 y.o. in Kentucky ... 13 months in S.E.A. in the Vietnam War cured that...
Nothing like learning from your mistakes -— we are not likely to repeat them...
Now I feel better.
My issue isn’t with her but how some read the article
to start with
Although some Nevada Ron Paul supporters have joined the campaign of former basketball player Danny Tarkanian, a win by Angle would be favorable by far to a win by self-financed multimillionaire and former GOP state chair Sue Lowden, who cheated Paul supporters out of impending victory at the state GOP convention by abruptly adjourning the convention and appointing her own set of central committee members. This is more detail:
As I pointed out in March, Lowden earned the ire of Nevada libertarian activists back in 2008 for what they see as her hijacking of the state party convention. John McCain had sewn up the GOP nomination before Nevada Republicans gathered, and Lowden had put in place a set of rules designed to rubber-stamp a slate of McCain delegates. But the convention was taken over by Ron Paul supporters, who launched an insurgency on the convention floor and succeeded in overturning rules. That's from the Wa Po.Lowden -- who was then the Nevada GOP chairwoman -- panicked. She and other state GOP leaders shut the convention down, promising to reconvene the delegates at a later date. But they never did. Instead, Lowden held a private conference call with state Republican leaders who secretly approved the slate of McCain delegates. The Libertarian activists -- many of whom now populate the Tea Party movement in Nevada -- never forgave her.
This is the beginning? That she switched parties? You do know Reagan did that. Or did you not know that?
Hmmmm.
Because they see it differently than you? No one is denying she went from R to D to I to R, they are just pointing out that a lot of people change parties and it sometimes doesn’t mean a hill of beans in regards to their political positions. You are hung up on thinking that people are using the D to R transformation as analogous to Angle’s R to D to I to R change is a mistake in their reading.
Maybe it is just a mistake in your understanding their point?
Palin’s father went to Nevada to campaign for Tarkanian
I suport Republicans over Democrats.
“Lots of us were once registered Democrats. Then we got jobs, families, responsibilties and brains”
Me too.
CBS News trying to stir the pot and help Reid.
Stephanie, tell Reid & Axelrod their "divide & conquer" strategy on Sharron is an Epic .
Cheers!
I support Conservatives. That cuts out virtually all dems, and most (ok quite a few by their actions) republicans.
Palins father went to Nevada to campaign for Tarkanian
That's your answer to "do you approve of lies and deception?" LOL
She knows how they think and what sneaky things they do.
Could be a big plus.
That wasn’t in response to your comment
If she's *IN*, she can vote as conservatively as humanly possible for six years.
At least.
WARNING: VULGAR LANGUAGE IN LINK.
You've got a problem with that?
Cheers!
“Sharron Angle Was Once a Registered Democrat”
So what? Heck, up until a few years ago, I was a Democrat. I’ve never been a member of the GOP.
If this is the worst dirt they can find, then Ms. Angle is beyond squeaky clean.
