Internet 'kill switch' proposed for US
ZDNet ^ | 6/16/10 | Declan McCullagh

A new US Senate Bill would grant the President far-reaching emergency powers to seize control of, or even shut down, portions of the internet.

The legislation says that companies such as broadband providers, search engines or software firms that the US Government selects "shall immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed" by the Department of Homeland Security. Anyone failing to comply would be fined.

One might say they could shut down Jihad websites,

bill makes it clear that the president's authority includes securing our national cyber infrastructure from attack. The section of the bill that addresses this issue, applies specifically to the national response to a severe attack or natural disaster. This particular legislative language is based on longstanding statutory authorities for wartime use of communications networks....The purpose of this language is to clarify how the president directs the public-private response to a crisis, secure our economy and safeguard our financial networks, protect the American people, their privacy and civil liberties, and coordinate the government's response. - CNet http://www.sefermpost.com/sefermpost/2009/08/us-senate-bill-gives-president-control-of-internet.html

This is very short sided of Obummer. He should think beyond the end of his nose and realize that if he gives himself this power then future Republican presidents will have the same power. Payback is heck.

I cannot see any case where doing so would help National Security.

What would make you think this bill has anything to do with National Security? Clearly, it's all about Job Security -- for Obama and congressional democrats.

One more step in his total conversion of America with him as dictator for life. After his corrupt reelection in 2012 he will outlaw elections for national security.

Does it make sense to you that if the administration actually goes through with this, there won’t be another administration to follow?

>Folks, legislation like this should scare the **** out of you.

No kidding; and it does.
On a militia-level this would cut out much of The People’s means of communication, as well as being a blow to the supply-lines.
IOW, this [legislation] should be seen for what it is: Enemy Action.

Everyone who is talking about November being a “great flushing” is likely delusional: the electoral processes has been so compromised that those in power are VERY unlikely to be “thrown out;” those who ARE thrown out may even be showpieces to show people that “their votes do matter.”

Stalin said: “It doesn’t mater who votes, it is those who count the votes that mater.”

Stupid. The whole point of the Internet is to survive a nuclear attack. Even if they shut down the core routers in the US all you need is a single point of connection to somewhere in the rest of the world and a mesh network. They’ll have to triangulate and shut down every ham radio operator in the states.

Can’t expect our own so-called journalists to report. They’re all either co-opted or dumbed-down.
