Republicans and a dozen Democratic defectors in the Senate have dealt a defeat to President Barack Obama just days after he pressed Congress to renew pieces of last year's economic bill.

After coming out on the losing end of a 52-45 test vote, Obama's Democratic allies have been forced back to the drawing board in their efforts to extend unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless and provide $24 billion in aid to cash-strapped state governments.

Wants to kill the middle class.

There is no "middle class" in Communist countries.

That is likely part of the goal - to turn us into a bankrupt Marxist dictatorship.

Fortunately, most Americans are now awake, and he won't succeed.

Wants to kill the [white] middle class.

Read my original post for the missing adjective. My point was that his motive is not only ideological. Marxism is only a tool to get at his real target.

"I’ve always said the only thing keeping blood from running in the streets is welfare and extended unemployment benefits."

There are too many ideologues, here, who either don't know this, or actively want a revolution.

Naturally, whoever wrote this bill had to stuff as much pork as he thought it would hold. The problem is that you have HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of baby boomers who bought into this whole work hard and you will thrive, and today they just lost the farm.

They worked their whole lives, were proud they never took a dime from the Feds. The Pols, Dem and Rhino, raped them, blandly drove the jobs overseas, over taxed and over-regulated the remainders, until now 1 in every 5 workers, NATIONWIDE is out of work, big boatloads of them past 50, the knees are going, the eyes aren't as sharp, they know an industry that isn't working VERY well.

So here we have all these smug little pud-pullers saying, "Well, what's wrong with Micky Dee's?" Minimum wage ain't gonna save your house. It ain't gonna feed your kids. It ain't gonna pay the utilities. AND EVEN WALMART IS FULL UP!!!

41,000 hires, NATIONWIDE, LAST MONTH!!!

How many of these keyboard killers, after years of sitting on their Obamas, think they can just go back to loading pallets, on the night shift, without any health insurance, without hitting the floor with a cardiac infarction?

I'm beginning to think that DU just might have a minor point or two...

True unemployment can’t last forever, but for millions of Americans it’s their only income during this obama depression. I believe that that obama is a good chicago politican and is going to use this to hurt republicans in the fall elections. Cutting the unemployment checks at this time is a great move by the democratic party. A few democrats will vote (encourged to do so) to end the checks ,but the blame will be placed on the Republican party. Are you going to blame obama if the Republicans took your only income away?

"True unemployment can’t last forever,..."

It's going to last long enough to wipe out everyone's savings, put them in an apartment, and be happy for whatever "stimulus" job our overlords will let us have...

The swing toward frugality runs counter to the advice of economists who support the bill's funding for additional jobless benefits and help to states to avoid layoffs of public service jobs. They fear that the economy could slip back into recession just as it's emerging from the biggest economic downturn since the Great Depression.

It doesn’t matter what they do though. They already signed their own death warrants with the “healthcare” fiasco.

Why not use $24 billion from the $800 billion so-called ‘stimulus’ bill?

In a macroeconomic sense that is true. But unemployment compensation is a very slim way to live. UNLESS you’re supplementing it with under-the-table, tax-free work, which is entirely possible in a lot of cases. Oppression leads to black markets. Black markets for food, black markets for alcohol/drugs/tobacco, black market for labor. It’s a healthy thing actually. Proof that you can’t kill capitalism, you can only drive it underground. For a while.

Yeah, HE would say that he wants to elevate the so-called lower classes and have a more egalitarian society. But the reality is that socialism just means everybody gets miserable together. You can wrap an old fish in newspaper, it still stinks.

thank you. We pay taxes on unemployment. There are no jobs here and even those with degrees and much younger are having problems finding jobs.

Those people are the proletariat. The commies-in-charge are the Vanguard of the Proletariat. You know how Hitler would do it? He would never order things like, break all the Jewish store windows... he would just hint that he wanted something done and his muscle in the streets would go out and do it.

yep we don’t know what we are going to do. The unemployment helped pay for meds, doctor and food, gas and electric. Went through savings a few years back when company closed up, never been the same. I am disabled and thank God it is just me and my husband. We have always paid for our health care now we have none, don’t want government health care. Our doc. gives discounts for those who have no insurance and we go to walmart and kmart for the best prices on meds. I pray something positive happens to change things. Personally I believe there is plenty of corruption in both parties.

Well, a whole lot of people are not going to be laughing since this means the doctors will all take a 21% cut in treating Medicare patients and stop treating the elderly as a result, since they can no longer afford to work for less than it costs them to treat these patients... the doc fix was in this bill.
