Add Elton John to those who were not expecting him to get an invite to Rush Limbaugh's wedding.
"To put it in Elton's exact words, when he got the invitation, he was 'a little surprised,' " his partner David Furnish told PEOPLE on Sunday at the Tony Awards in New York. "And then, when it turned out to be a genuinely sincere invitation Elton said, 'Life is about building bridges, not walls.' "
John also saw it as another opportunity, in his words, "to go where people wouldn't expect me to go."
"And maybe if I can make a great impression," Furnish quoted him as saying, "people might change their perspectives on life."
Furnish was in Europe and couldn't attend the wedding. But John told him it was a beautiful event and Limbaugh and his bride "were incredibly gracious and very welcoming and very sweet and very appreciative."
"Elton, during the performance made a lot of cracks: 'I suppose you all wonder why I'm here tonight?' " says Furnish. "But ultimately, it's a bit like an olive branch, I guess."
By all accounts, John and the couple got along well. "I wasn't there, but from everything Elton told me, he said Rush and his bride were incredibly charming and welcoming. And they have said they want to come and have dinner with us in England, if they pass through in their travels."
The tentative offer was welcomed. "We have to bring the world together, not apart," said Furnish, who produced Next Fall with Sir Elton on Broadway.
Uh, yeah. I'm sure that's what he meant. /s

Ooooooooh-kay.
I think it’s cool, too. And it makes me really want to go and see Elton perform.
“Just because it’s accepted & everyone says it, doesn’t make it a correct usage.”
Who decides “correct?” In what document is it published? Does such a source purport to define both British and American “correct” usage?
“... and you might add loan is a noun and lend is the verb. Among other things ...”

Hey, here is a clue for any liberal at PEOPLE ragazine who might troll here: MAINSTREAM CONSERVATIVES DON’T HATE GAY PEOPLE.
We DON’T think they should get special treatment, but what they do behind closed doors, IF it is between adults, is their business.
What they’ve got isn’t MARRIAGE, ‘cause MARRIAGE is between a man and a woman. But if they wanna set a legal arrangement, like ANY two partners (gay or straight) want to do, that is FINE.
We DON’T think they should get special privileges, quotas, consideration for hiring just because they’re gay.
We DON’T think they should be physically abused or attacked because they’re gay. Those who do attack ANY person should be prosecuted BECAUSE THEY’VE ATTACKED SOMEONE...the reason doesn’t matter. (I was picked on once because I was wearing glasses, and some brain-dead bully thought I was an easy mark. Oops...he screwed up.)
We APPRECIATE the contributions all men and women have made to our civilization: gay, straight, white, black, yellow, red, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Canadian, Hispanic, Eskimo...you name it.
WE WELCOME ANYONE WHO WANTS TO WORK HARD and DO THEIR BEST. WE REJECT ANYONE WHO WANTS A HAND OUT and GOVERNMENT ENDORSEMENT OF THEIR NON-TRADITIONAL BEHAVIOR.
I think it depends on where you live. Certain areas have higher gay populations than others thus a higher probability of stealth gay contact.I grew up in So.Cal. (Orange County) in the 60's and to this day I don't have one friend or relation or friend of a relation that is gay...not one.

I have lived in OC continuously since 1954, school, work, etc.
And I have known several gay people.
My HS Student Body President, valedictorian, became a prominent Lost Angeles school teacher and early openly gay male figure.
At a very large Irvine based coprporation, a guy was a VP. People guessed out loud that he wasn’t married, etc. Now retired, resides in Laguna, and openly donates to gay causes.
At that same corporation (energy services industry) I had a couple of subordinates, who were gay men.
One needed termination, so in the mid 70s we made sure we had documentation for work product shortcomings.
Another was a solid manager, originally from rural Georgia, USA.
A prominent real estate agent in my current town is fairly openly gay. He was previously a CPA.
In my neighborhood there are (at least) two homes with long time homosexual residents.
One a single man who is well known to be gay. Original owner, dating to late 60s. Drives muscle cars.
The other a lesbian couple. No complaints. No late night parties, pink flags, bumper stickers, etc.
None have ever bothered me.
I’m with you...GOOD FOR YOU RUSH!! Be happy and prosper!! LUV man!!
My uncle is gay and in a very long term relationship.. personally I could care less, it doesn’t affect me in any way whatsoever.
Well, it must have been one heck of a honeymoon. ;o)

Did you hear his comment about “we were busy every night and sometimes during the afternoons”? EEEEEEWWWWWWWW!!!
It would be like if your parents said that to you. You love them, but just a little too much information.
Apparently when Rush and Katherine were in Hawaii Elton was at the same hotel. Rush said he went out on the balcony singing an Elton John song... LOL Katherine wrote Elton a note about singing or something at the wedding. Then Rush was taken to the hospital where Elton came by to visit.
I found the whole thing inspiring, especially all the standing O's Elton got at the concert for the wedding.
We all know Rush is rich and he was very excited today talking about the wedding.
His new wife is not from an affluent background so I doubt his money played apart in their marriage.
I am happy for Rush and maybe he has found the right one now... who knows!
Most of us could never have his lifestyle, but it is still nice hearing about how much fun it was for him and all his 400 friends..LOL
wife is from affluent background.. sorry for the typo
Great minds and all that,FRiend.
Same here. Likely they are buds in recovery also (even if never spoken.)
There might have been some in the neighborhood or at school or some jobs (I doubt it) but why would I even need to, let alone want to know?
I Like Elton John's music, especially from the 70's and I don't know if I knew he was gay at first or not because I don't/didn't care.
You've heard the joke, right?
