I am not a trained linguist, but I have a bit of experience, going back several decades.

My first car had a boot, a bonnet, wings, a magneto, and tyres; according to the owners manuel.

Well, I looked it up. Things have changed since I was in the sixth grade. I still can't get over the memory of the time I used loan as a verb in front of my English teacher (insert existential PAIN here). And I knew it was wrong before I said it. He said nothing, but I knew he must have noticed. After 50 years, I am vindicated, but not comforted.
