President Barack Obama is poised to seize the handling of oil spill damage claims from BP, his chief spokesman said Tuesday, as Obama sought to reassure people he's up to the enormous challenge of helping them recover from the environmental disaster. He will outline his specific plans and expectations in a prime-time Oval Office speech.
The aim of wresting the claims-handling from the British petroleum giant, press secretary Robert Gibbs said, would be to make economically distressed individuals and businesses "whole." The claims processing problem is among several difficult issues that Obama planned to address directly in the talk to the nation.

Voicing increasing confidence in his ability to confront the nation's worst environmental crisis, Obama was set to outline a comprehensive response and recovery program, while assuring not only the people from the afflicted region, but all across America, that his administration will guide the country to a recovery.
On the matter of the disputed damage payments, Gibbs said, "We have to get an independent claims process. I think everyone agrees that we have to get BP out of the claims processes and, as I said, make sure that fishermen, hotel owners have a fast, efficient and transparent claims process so that they're getting their livelihoods replaced."
"This disaster has taken their ability to make a living away from them," he said. "We need to do this quickly, and we have to make sure that whatever money goes into that — that in no way caps what BP is responsible for. Whatever money they owe to anybody in the Gulf, they're going to have to pay regardless of the amount."

OK, what does this have to do with stopping the flow of oil and cleaning up what is already in the gulf???!!!! I hear NOTHING about that!!!! What is going on??!!! Where is the investigative journalism?
What a great idea..because this administration has proven time and again that they can handle this kind of responsibility.....although, at the moment, I just can’t seem to think of one example of this admin being responsible for ANYTHING.
Now BP has spend resources on protecting itself from this incompetent administration instead of dedication ALL of its resources to solving the problem at hand.

Oh, I thought Chapter 11 was restructuring (business), Chapter 7 was liquidation (business or individual), and chapter 13 was debt restructure (individual). My apologies. (Not a lawyer, never been bankrupt -- as he raps on his head)

This is about buying votes and nothing else. BP has been seen and accused of dragging their feet on paying claims (OH MY VERIFYING THE VALIDITY HOW DARE THEY!!!!!), so the Dems see an opportunity to step in and hand the people some money in an attempt to look like the savior and hopefully seal some votes in time for the 2010 elections.
Yeah, like with Goldman Sachs, Obama brings the drama to appear like he is standing up for the “citizens”. Well, he is just as much cuddled close in a musty bed with BP as he is with GS. Dichotomy Rediculi!

If I were Obama (and thank God I am not), I’d have television crews and cameras going 24 hours on the cleanup effort. Just to show people that I was working so hard on that. Because I have a big ego, and I would want to show the world that I, Zero, was doing all this good.
So we are not seeing that. It’s not happening. Because if it were, we’d see it. You know the press would be chomping at the bit to cover his every good deed in minute detail.
