Here's a dose of reality.

The father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland told The NY Post that he's broke and had signed a contract to do a reality show, "Adventures in Sunderland," about his family of daredevil kids weeks after she set off on her doomed and dangerous solo sail around the globe.

Laurence Sunderland, a sailing instructor who lives in the middle-class Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks with his pregnant wife and seven kids, opened their home to film crews four months ago.

David Farragut, born in 1801, entered the US Navy as a Midshipman in 1810, and was given command of a captured British whaling ship while serving in the War of 1812.

He was twelve.

Four years later, he was in the Mediterranean addressing pirates along the Barbary Coast.

but I have yet to find, in personal discussions or printed word, any person knowledgeable in sailing who thought this venture had more than a 10% chance of success...and since failure means being stranded alone on the ocean, the whole concept boggles my mind.

Its all about the money, and all the folks calling people nanny staters still have not answered the question what if the french fishing boat had floundered as well

How many lives is a TV show worth?

Shameful. Perhaps social services should check into this family.

Damn, people! How did you get so judgmental?

This is America, damnit!

I'll be the first to say I think social services are heavy handed and have a liberal agenda. But tell us what should be done with parents who put their kids life in danger for financial gain?

It she is a minor child. Parents are to protect their children, not endanger them.

I let my kid ride her bike on the road. Am I a bad dad?

Oh yeah, I also let my kid ride her jet ski on the ocean. Does that make me a bad dad as well?

At 14, a kid can go get an abortion without parental consent. Which would you rather, Abby sailing the high seas at 16, or getting an abortion?

You lost me. The choice is get an abortion or try to sail around the world on a small boat in treacherous winter seas? I guess I haven’t had enough coffee yet.

“I have every reason to believe that they will do what they can to raise the money to reimburse those who spent money on the rescue as that would be the right thing to do.”

“Abby’s mother Marianne Sunderland, who is pregnant with the family’s eighth child, said the family did not have the money to compensate Australian rescue officials,..”

“The full cost of chartering an Airbus would be so high, you’d think they would have to work with the US Government for that,” she said from her California home.”

"With Abby Sunderland - I wouldn't have let her go, if I was her parents."

Let her go? Are you kidding me? Do you realize where "her dream" came from? It's all on the website interview of the father. When she was 13 her father took her on a cruise up the coast. The weather was terrible and she was complaining the whole way, yet the cruise continued for several days. At the end of the trip the fater asked her "Abbey, are you ready to sail around the world now"?

No, I’m not kidding.

She’s 16. She’s a child. It’s her parents decision, not hers.

The world would be in far better shape if more parents exercised their parental duties.

Giving a child whatever they want is spoiling them and creates the type of entitlement mentality that dominates the left.

I’m aware as well, that her parents may have created this idea in her - that just makes it even worse. But I’m not assuming that’s the case. I know a lot of kids who are driven themselves - it’s still their parents job to parent them.

Best case - she chose to do this herself, and her parents should have said no.

Worst case - they pressured her to do it. And they shouldn’t have.

Lots of possibilities in between - but all of them lead to the same conclusion. This child should not have been at sea alone.

And all the time, he had a crew. And had been training on ships since he was 9.

Most aspiring young sailors crew racing vessels or deliver purchased boats the “learn the ropes”. Did Abby even sail the Wild Eyes from the point of purchase to her home?

No.

“These young folks are the Jacques Cousteaus of the future.”

Oh please.

Cousteau invented stuff and made a career out of showing the deep sea to the world.

The Sunderlands have had their 15 minutes of fame and have proven to be jackasses.
