A French fishing vessel rescued a California teenager Saturday from her crippled sailboat in the turbulent southern Indian Ocean, bringing relief to her family but ending her around-the-world sailing effort.

Keep posting to yourself, at least then you know somebody’s listening.
I must ask: What is it you have against the Sunderland family? How do you suggest they live their lives, and what gives YOU the right to do so?
I’m trying to stay out of the dust-up but you are over-reaching to be petty.
It happens that Zac accomplished something extraordinary. We used to admire derring-do. We used to celebrate it. Now, you want us to be a peanut gallery making snotty snipes at the few remaining adventurous spirits among us.
God help us.
It hurts to be PWN3D by a 16 yr old girl doesn’t it? If you won’t take it out on me I won’t take it out on you.
; )
History has thoroughly cheated the spineless do-nothings of their rightful legacy.
Then what did she accomplish? What did the Australian 16 yr old accomplish other than a way to make money and a vehicle with which to brag? WHAT did they accomplish? HOW have they benefited mankind? And what's next? A 15 year old? A 14? Where will you draw the line? A 10 year old?
If it weren't for fate she'd have made it too.
If it weren't for fate poor planning she'd have made it too.
In the light of that reality you and I butt sitting like a couple girly men
LOL! I'm a 60 year old grandmother with herniated discs that's yapping while I rest my back from gardening. It HURTS to bend over and weed. It HURTS to dig a hole in rock strewn clay and plant a rose. But I do it. Slowly. But I do it.
Gotta fix the head gasket on the air compressor so it's ready for painting the magnesium Corvette wheels for our LT1/six speed WS6 Firebird.
Ah...a Firebird. We used to have a 64 GTO convertible. I loved that car!
"Yes... self reliant. Many ventures of this type and in business as well garner sponsorships... some succeed and some fail. Thats life. Of course you can just sit on the sidelines and be a part of the peanut gallery... seems like many here are pretty successful at that... congrats for some of the smarmiest comments Ive seen on FR for a long time."
Your post makes no sense in the context of what I have said, and I stand by what I have posted.
The deranged attacks on this girl and her family are unworthy of FR.
French authorities called it a "delicate operation" and at one point the fishing boat's captain fell into the ocean. "He was fished out in difficult conditions" and is in good health, said a statement from the French territory of Reunion Island. Laurence Sunderland said the crew used its dinghy in the transfer.
No. She failed by going into the Indian Ocean in winter. VERY poor planning.
Good post. I agree. The hatred expressed here for Abby and her wonderful accomplishment are so sad for me to witness. I had thought most Freepers were free of such bitter pettiness and envy. You said it all when you said “she sailed around the Horn.” This, in and of itself, sets her above almost all of the world sailors, certainly braver than I, and shows a remarkable level of competence in one so young.
Posters quote people when responding to them so they understand the context of the response.
Your post makes no sense in the context of what I have said,
Which means you have no response to being called on making a personal attack.
The deranged attacks on this girl and her family are unworthy of FR.
You don't run FR.
Oh...and it says: NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts. So you repeat the smear. Cute.
What a laugh! You decry a personal attack when you are called out on smarmy attacks on a 16 y.o. and her family! Grow up.
I would say,,,FIRST the collecting funds should go to pay back the rescue and the sponsors!!
If the Australian gov't (which is funding the rescue) announces they want donations to pay for this effort, then I will indeed "pony up the coins." And if this amazing lass wants to try again, I would be happy to donate to that effort.
I once was involved in a rescue effort of a boater who was stranded at sea. Somehow it never occurred to me to ask him to pay for the gas my boat used to save him. I was happy to do it. Some things you do for others without worrying about the cost. There has been a long tradition on our planet to rescue others in distress: whether on mountaintops, in burning buildings or even stranded at sea. It is one of the nobler instincts of our species.
This is a discussion forum. People are discussing the stupidity of allowing a young girl to sail alone in winter on the Indian Ocean.
You on the other hand are insulting posters for their opinions. So everyone has to think like you or they are wrong? YOU grow up!
Did you have to charter a Qantas Airbus to find him then divert 3 ships to sail for 2 days to get to him?
“quibble over what Theodor Roosevelt meant by the word “man” completely forgetting the sense of the passage about being in the ring, etc., which is where this young lady placed herself. And I assure you that once she cast off lines and took the helm, the only person who set the course and steered it was she herself.”
I accept your point, indeed I never argued with it; she did set the course and steered. No question.
As for quibbling over the adulthood of the prose by Roosevelt, to me, it is not a minor point but very significant. I admire and applaud those adults who choose to take risks whether they fail or succeed. That is what men are. God bless them.
I do not admire those who put their kids up for it, though. That is not a “quibble” to me but is actually the only reason I oppose this teen’s venture.
Bravo!
I am the landlubber wife of a sailor. I have rotten ears. He loves boats, wind and water. He began sailing on Lake Michigan in high school, thanks to the father of a friend. He owns one sailboat in a partnership and is building the second, by himself. If you want it badly enough, it doesn’t have to cost very much. Basically, you just give up most everything else!
He would give an arm to be able to sail around the Horn. His voice cracks when he speaks of this young girl’s accomplishments.
He does think she needed a less frisky boat, though.
Obviously you have poor reading skills. If you read through the Abby threads you will see full on personal attacks on this girl and her family, no these are not just people expressing disagreement, they are on full on assault of this girl and her family.
You are the proverbial pot calling the kettle at hurling insults. I hope your reading skills improve over time.
Amazes me the drooling emotional “you go girl” Oprah-esque adultion going on.
Amazing. Based on sentimental feelings and perhaps vicarious thrills; I don’t really get it.
Proof that it’s emotion-based is the total intolerance of any view that sees her as anything but a heroine who dreamed the impossible dream, or that her parents should not have put her into such danger merely for name, fame and money.
