A French fishing vessel rescued a California teenager Saturday from her crippled sailboat in the turbulent southern Indian Ocean, bringing relief to her family but ending her around-the-world sailing effort.

Laurence Sunderland said the crew used its dinghy to retrieve his daughter. "We are just ecstatic that she is alive and well and survived the ordeal."
Looking on the bright side, neither Indian nor US taxpayers had to finance an expensive rescue operation for this child, whose parents should lose custody of her immediately for letting her put her life in danger.
I’ll bet she tries again. She was trying to break the record held by her brother. This is a family with more money than sense.
Oh please
Yes government should be in charge of how you raise your kids.
The mother indicated that the effort was rushed because of the advertising sponsorship dollars. If her parent had delayed the trip to the spring, Abby would have been too old to win any type of sailing record. There was no interest from the sponsors if she had turned 17 before the trip ended.
Selfish, selfish, selfish...
Well you can’t count on the Frogs to help in a fight, but if there’s a cute 16 year old damsel in distress in the middle of nowhere they’re right on it. I suppose that makes them good for something.
And I second the “more money than sense” thought but that’s life.
They are a poor family. They have 7 kids and the mom is pregnant with their 8th. The money for the trips have come from advertising sponsors. They do not have a lot of money and they do have a lot of mouths to feed.
She can’t break the record now because she would be too old.
Yeah, at least Columbus borrowed the money before he went off and did something this stupid...
And there we have it folks it was all about the advertizers and MONEY!
When your an imbecile, yes.
The ship was abandoned, too. And now she’s too old for her advertising sponsors to buy her a new one.
Her mom is pregnant with her 8th kid so they can try this stunt again in a few years with a different kid.
There, I didn't say it.
Her mom herself said it was about the advertisers and the money and Abby’s age that drove the rushed timing of this stunt.
In January, her mom had major concerns about sailing in the winter, but that the sponsors said they wouldn’t provide the funding if she was 17.
Really? You aren't pulling my leg?
If you're correct, this is a bit like the reality show wannabee family who claimed their kid had gone off in that balloon.
It would take a special kind of entrepreneurial con talent to do what you're saying they've done. I guess I'd have to respect that, in a weird sort of way.
If she is too old to break the record it will be interesting to see if she pursues this. If it is something she really wanted to do then she will. If it is only about the record and fame then she won’t.
Her brother doesn’t hold the record. An Aussie girl just did it and there’s no way Abby would complete her trip in time.
This trip wasn’t going to qualify her any way. She had to stop in Cape Town.
who are the advertisers (sponsors)??
