This really is the new meme among his supporters, believe it or not, per the fact that the video below comes from the White House itself: Not only shouldn’t our global messiah be expected to plug the damn hole — he’s not Superman, people! — but evidently he shouldn’t be expected to find out if there’s any containment boom sitting in a warehouse somewhere waiting to be used either.
What he’s supposed to do, apparently, is go around reminding people why he’s really not to blame. I’ll say this for him: He’s awfully good at that, at least.

Well said. I think following "rules" right now is a weird response. We've never seen anything like this. I know this will sound like some kind of heresy, but (the disaster part set aside for a second), this is fascinating. Most of us have never watched ROVs work under water for an hour at a time. Most of us didn't know what a blowout preventer was or why this one failed. Drilling mud, why is that important? And I'm betting the solution to this HUGE problem will be just as fascinating. There seem to be two kinds of people out there ... thinkers and talkers. The talkers we see yakking on TV and in DC ... but the THINKERS are the fun ones to watch. These are people that are focusing on "plugging the damned hole" and tuning out the political rhetoric. THEY will be the heroes who eventually solve this problem.
As for technology, I've discovered The Oil Drum ... a great site to learn the technology. I have their RSS coming to my home page and seem to learn something new every day.
We are facing an unprecedented problem (to use Obama's favorite words) ... but it is the unprecedented solution that will really amaze us.
