Mommy needs to do hard prison time for the rest of her life.

Mommy is likely to have a really hard rest of her life, regardless. Losing a child is hard enough, but this...

She not only left it where the child could get to it, she put it back in the same place after finding the child playing with it -- AND then left children alone in the room to watch a movie.

I am speechless...

Probably not legal, either.

But, why keep the TV and the gun in the same room where 4 children play on a regular basis?

A double action works when you pull the trigger it cocks the hammer the fires. A single you have to cock the hammer first then fire.

What good is a locked up gun?

IMO it depends on how "locked up" it is. It is quite easy to get a safe or gun cabinet with an electronic combination lock and a manual key override and use that to store a loaded gun when it is not needed. And surely there are many other ways to keep a gun away from children but readily accessible during an emergency situation.

I just see guns like any other potentially lethal object to which you do not want children having unsupervised access. Power tools, household chemicals, matches and other items fall in the same category.

No one in their right mind should ever leave any gun where a child can get unsupervised access to it.

"Mommy is likely to have a really hard rest of her life, regardless. Losing a child is hard enough, but this..."

Sorry, but I'm not all that concerned about this woman's feelings. She knowingly provided a two year old child with access to a loaded handgun.

TMJ radio reports the boy's mother caught him playing with the .38 caliber gun a day before, punished him and put the gun back in the same drawer.

She needs to be locked in a cage.

See, this is my question - if it is a revolver - then it takes two actions to fire it, right?

And if it is an automatic, would the child’s hand reach be long enough to have the leverage to pull the trigger?

“Could a 2 year old really have the strength to pull the trigger on a handgun?”

Many small children dont have the finger strength (or length) to pull the trigger on a gun. What they do is to turn it around so that it faces them and pull it using both thumbs. That’s how these children shoot themselves instead of just putting a hole in the floor.

The thing about young kids and handguns is that their natural curiosity makes them want to manipulate the trigger. Unfortunately the only way they have the strength to pull the trigger is by holding the gun with the barrel towards them, wrapping their fingers around the back of the grip and using both thumbs to depress the trigger.

That makes sense. How tragic.

Ahh, it begins to make more sense. What a thoughtless, uncaring mother to leave this weapon in a room full of small children, knowing that the two year old had discovered the gun and played with it the day before.

Sorry.

Double action ... when you pull the trigger it cocks the hammer, pushes a round into the chamber, and fires the gun (by releasing the hammer).

Single action ... just fires the gun (hammer is already cocked and round is already in the chamber).

The trigger pull to simply release the hammer is short and light. The trigger pull to cock the hammer, move the round and release the hammer is long and heavy.

product of Milwaukee Public Schools and 100 years of socialism/progressivism/communism in Milwaukee.

I really do pity the children who are trapped in that death-spiral of a system. How are they supposed to grow up to be wise, productive people when they have all those elements working against them?

How much you want to bet there was no gun safety course taught in mama’s school?

For most situations, particularly during the daytime, a loaded gun is a bigger threat to little kids than a bad guy. During the day, keep the gun locked up. Remove it at night if needed.

I’ve been keeping a gun on top of our wardrobe, but our granddaughter is getting big enough that she can arrange stuff and climb...so time for a gun safe. Or trigger lock.
