There was an overwhelming response to the Austin Police Department's first ever "Guns for Groceries" event.

Hundreds of people turned out Saturday to exchange unwanted guns for vouchers to buy groceries.

"The line is very shocking to me. We had people in the parking lot at 7:30 a.m. waiting to turn their guns in, and the event did not start until 9 a.m," APD's Sgt. Ely Reyes said.

Department officials ran out of grocery vouchers after about two and a half hours.

APD asked the community to turn in any gun, no questions asked. In exchange, people got anywhere from $10 to $200 in grocery store gift cards.

"People like me who don't use them, haven

This is a great way to get rid of worthless junk guns. It's also a way to get rid of guns used in crimes.

Unfortunately, some little old ladies will probably turn in their deceased hubby's guns for pennies on the dollar. They'll get $50 for a S&W .357 that would go for $500 to $700 on the market. I'll bet a lot of these cops "review" the firearms that are turned in prior to having them bulldozed. These cops get a better deal than Jay Leno got on his Duesenberg.

but wouldn't even junky guns likely fetch more than "$10 to $200" on Gunbroker.com?

Not if they are hopelessly damaged, were used in crime, are stolen, or if the bearer is a felon.

It’s a reference to Eastern African languages. Either that or that clicking sound is ammo being loaded into the guns of the MSM against FR, courtesy of Ulster.

If you had half a brain, you would sell your gun to a gunshop for a lot more than some stupid grocery coupons.

The the Third World they have “free health care and food” for sterilization.

What is amazing here is that there are that many people who are in such dire need of free food in the Austin area! However, we should not assume the guns they are giving to the fascist social engineers are necessiarily the only guns they own or are guns of any use to them.

Not to worry, those turning them in would only hurt themselves or someone who knew better than give up their weapons.

This is a brilliant idea. What kind of vegetable do I have to turn in to get a fully automatic classic Thompson?

The people involved probably really shouldn’t have guns.

If they’re out of work, there are other programs available. I think these were the people who just probably shouldn’t own a gun. Dimwits.

Exactly! That’s why I called them dimwits. They shouldn’t have guns if they are this dumb.

Now that I saw the video, I think you make a good point but they could probably have sold them privately for more money. Of course, that requires some effort. This was an easy way for them to do it.

I figure I could make a Lego(tm) gun and turn it in. It is morally wrong to let a sucker keep their money.

The other thing to do is to set up a table upstream of the Po-Po table, and offer more, and a good home, to deserving firearms.

When I did own a gunshop, I had customers who bought my stripped junk parts guns, cheap chinese airguns that looked like aks, wall hangers, etc to go and “turn them in” at the buy backs. Their reasoning was to help burn up the money alloted for the buybacks (and to make a profit!). I always thought that was funny on several levels...

Unfortunately, some little old ladies will probably turn in their deceased hubby's guns for pennies on the dollar.

This happened twenty, thirty years ago in Chicago. Little old lady was afraid of her deceased husband's revolver, so she turned it in to the police, who were running a "gun buy back". Turned out to be a '73 Single Action Army with the lowest serial number anyone had ever seen, one of the first made. In very good condition. Worth a jillion bazillion bucks, even back then. I don't know what happened to it, but the story, with a picture of the arm made it into the Tribune real fast. I'm sure it found a home in a collection or a museum somewhere.

To raise money, the City of Austin will later sell these guns to dealers.

“Guns for Groceries”

Only takes an inane saying to get people to willfully trample on the 2A.

Idiots.

They make an assumption that arms are inherently evil

They also make the assumpltion the guns are not stolen.
