Liberal Heads Explode Over Prospect of Newsweek Acquisition by NewsMax

Be on the alert for exploding liberal heads.

And the reason for these impending explosions? Michael Calderon at Yahoo! News reports:

It's been almost a month since the Washington Post Co. put Newsweek on the market, and by 5 p.m. today the initial bids are due. Despite skepticism over whether there will be bidders, Yahoo! News can confirm there's at least one: Newsmax Media.

"Newsmax Media Inc. has made a bid for Newsweek," said a company statement provided to Yahoo! News.

Oh my head! My exploding head!

However, is it really any surprise that Newsweek is now looking for a new owner? Here is the "brilliant" business plan initiated last year by Newsweek editor Jon Meacham which consisted of purposely cutting circulation in half while raising the magazine price:

Jon Meacham admits it is hard to explain, even to his own people, why chopping Newsweek's circulation in half is a good thing.

"It's hugely counterintuitive," the magazine's editor says. "The staff doesn't understand it."

...Newsweek, whose circulation was as high as 3.1 million in recent years, plans to cut that to 1.5 million by the beginning of 2010, in part by discouraging renewals. The magazine will begin charging the average subscriber about 90 cents an issue, nearly double the current rate.

Too funny! And this reaction before NewsMax has actually purchased Newsweek. Imagine the groaning if it really takes place!

Have the DUmmies posted any comments on this yet?

I’d love to see what they have to say.

Its an Alice in Wonderland World. These “journalists” have no problem being owned and operated by a blatantly partisan gang of leftie propagandists. After all, they are all fellow travelers. But, being owned and operated by a conservative organization is completely out of the question on grounds of objectivity. First the verdict, then we’ll have a fair trial.

It's hard to understand why Newsmax would want to own Newsweek. I doubt they'd want to continue it as a left wing propaganda rag. If not, then it follows that there would be a big turnover in editors and writers, and also in subscribers. They'd have a famous old name and some employees and a subscriber list that would probably dwindle rapidly.

They probably bid $1.00 just to toy with Newsweak. Can you imagine the reaction the average unsuspecting subscriber would have if the mag went from what it is now to being run by NewsMax overnight?

IMHO, if they reversed course and went conservative their circulation would GROW. They would be the anti-Time Magazine again, as FOX is the anti-CNN, which is what their business model used to be when they were profitable.
