Largest weapons cache in years seized in Laredo

Laredo police say they made one of their largest weapons seizures in years after pulling over a truck laden with brand new assault rifles, bayonets and ammunition that they believe was headed to Mexico.

The seizure Saturday afternoon came less then two weeks after Mexican President Felipe Calderon asked Congress to help stem the flow of guns from the U.S. into Mexico.

Acting on a tip from the Webb County Sheriff's Office, Laredo police stopped a vehicle containing 175 brand-new, boxed assault rifles, 200 high-capacity magazines, 53 bayonets and 10,000 rounds of ammunition. One of the two men in the vehicle tried to flee, but was apprehended, said Laredo Police Investigator Joe Baeza...

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the seizure, but Baeza said the presumption is the vehicle was heading to Mexico.

"Two Joe Blows aren't going to buy a bunch of weapons and it stops there," Baeza said. "We're pretty positive it was headed to Mexico." He declined to release the names of the two men in custody...

Baeza said the seizure hit home in the context of Calderon's recent visit to Washington, during which he suggested the U.S. reinstate its ban on the sale of assault rifles.

Mexico has long complained that its violent drug war was fueled in large part by weapons smuggled across the border...

"I fully respect, I admire the American Constitution and I understand that the purpose of the Second Amendment is to guarantee good American citizens the ability to defend themselves and their nation," Calderon said to a joint session of Congress during his May visit. "But believe me, many of these guns are not going to honest American hands."...

LOL Sorry! I only have seven more days of work left before summer vacation and we're all in full "teacher mode," blindly staggering towards the finish line. Anything misspelled or otherwise worthy of a red mark is getting nailed. Even subconsciously.

Well, 175 rifles is a lot of rifles, but the rest of it is bunk. A bit over 1 magazine per rifle, and about 6 rounds per. I wonder who the dealer was who accepted the forms stating these were for the purchaser’s sole use and that there were no straw purchases involved?

What? I always buy 150-200 of the exact same rifle when I go to the gun store!

Having new, boxed rifles is not a crime. Having 200 magazines is not a crime. Having 53 bayonets is not a crime. Having 10,000 rounds of ammo is not a crime. Thinking about going to Mexico is not a cime.

I would have thought they'd allow them to cross fully into Mexico and then arrest them, then there'd be no way they could deny their intent. If this is for real and not a screenplay.

If El Presidente, Senor Cadaveron, were really serious, he would follow President Obummer and Mayor Daily's lead, and sponsor a nation wide, Chicago style buy-back, offering to trade 100 peso Wal-Mart certificates for every functioning assault rifle turned in by the cartels.

He could then turn them over to the army, to be resold back to the cartels.

Perpetual motion, keeping them too busy to shoot Federales.

It’s not *us* they are trying to convince.

This is all preparation for international control of our guns/lives.

It’s a lot of rifles. I couldn’t get my hands on that many of them from my primary suppliers. If I split the order among five of them, I’d probably get them within a month, but it would raise a lot of eyebrows and cost over $150,000. If they were cheap ARs or AKs, they’d cost a lot less, but still over $85,000. The ammo is ten cases, which is do-able, but it’s another couple thousand dollars. The mags are worth about another $1,000.

Whoever staked these guys had a lot of cash.

"But believe me, many of these guns are not going to honest American hands."...

...and banning them works, because bad guys will obey the law.

Wait... never mind.
