Per fox News:
Coast Guard Spokesman Thad Allen says that BP successful at cutting the pipe - next move will be to try and fit CAP over the top of this cut. So, looks like no plans for a diamond cut - at least at this moment.

Every time I see Skandi and that tiny little dispersant stream all I can think of is that it is like trying to put out the towering inferno with a squirt gun.
Wow, the view on Ocean 2 right now looks just like a volcano. also, moving in for a close up of the cut.

They had a good view earlier[Skandi was shooting some ROV right up against the well head cut with its lights on] but it wasn’t on a feed.....
Did they screw the pooch?

One thing I don’t understand - I would have designed the cap to fit on the flange, not the pipe ...

Interestingly, from what the cams have shown so far, contrary to the very crimped cut on the Riser pipe, the cut at the top of the LMRP stack actually looks fairly symetrical. Wonder if they did some “shaping” with Jaws while we were all fixated on the riser pipe being pulled away?

I agree, Have to wait and see what the cap looks like. It will have to be mechanically fastened somehow I would think.
The cap is designed to slide onto the pipe and then clamp to the underside of the flange. It is fitted with a rubber seal that is supposed to pressure seal to the pipe when the cap is clamped down to the stack.
There will probably still be some leakage, but they are hoping for an 80%+ seal.
No kidding. I thought that view was the cut of stub but it was actually the riser. Got fooled by that. Looks like they are good to go. The question is, how deformed is the stub and how much can the sealing grommet conform.
