1 year after officer tackled him, man is bedridden, wife is caretaker
Seattle Times ^ | 16 May 10 | Sara Jean Green

OLYMPIA — Sarah Harris goes through the motions of her day trying hard not to think about what life was like a year ago — or what it would be like now if not for "the incident."

She feels guilty leaving the house, even if only for a couple of hours to visit her mom or sister, to run errands, or go grocery shopping. She still cries every night.

Her husband, the first boy she kissed and the only man she's ever loved, suffered a catastrophic brain injury when his head slammed into a concrete wall after a brief footchase with two King County sheriff's deputies on Mother's Day 2009. He's now confined to bed, unable to talk, walk or do anything for himself.

Christopher Sean Harris spent six weeks at Harborview Medical Center, where his family was encouraged to remove him from life support because doctors didn't think he'd ever come out of a coma. But he did, and was transferred to an Edmonds nursing home in June.

Sarah Harris, who worked as a manager for Nordstrom and dreamed of becoming a buyer for the department store, gave up her job to care for her husband.

"I loved my job, and I miss it all the time," she said. "But I knew there was no way I could go back to work and leave him alone in a nursing home all day. There was no decision to even make."

And it seems to me if I could know those men better, I
should become attached to them, as I do to men in
my own lands,
It seems to me they are as wise, beautiful, benevolent,
as any in my own lands;
O I know we should be brethren and lovers,
I know I should be happy with them.

Please go back and read things I’ve already discussed. This seems to be the very type of situation that police say they need tasers for...given the ambiguity of the situation, and certainly if the officer had chased this guy several blocks, he had time to have his taser out.

OK...let's say the homeowner saw the salesman approaching his property, reaching for a business card, sprinted at him full speed, and body checked him into a brick wall, leaving the salesman paralyzed...based on his fear that not taking him down would be his demise.

Bad example. The cop was running because the suspect was running.

He had a taser?

Well he pretty much made sure that's never going to happen again. The only running this guy's ever going to do is in his diaper. That'll teach him!

"He had a taser?"

More likely than not...from the Seattle PD's website:

"Seattle Police began its first limited deployment of tasers in December 2000. By the end of 2006, over half of all patrol officers had been trained and authorized to carry them."

But I record of two simple men I saw to-day, on the pier,
in the midst of the crowd, parting the parting of dear
friends,
The one to remain hung on the other’s neck, and
passionately kissed him,
While the one to depart, tightly prest the one to remain
in his arms.

Fair enough...too bad King's County SO doesn't appear to have that info...but this article suggests they haven't hesitated to use them in the past.

From the article I cite in #226...

"When deputies pulled her over, Valinda Otis told them she was pregnant and needed to use the bathroom. When they wouldn't let her go to a nearby restroom, she walked toward it, anyway, she said, and was quickly handcuffed and placed in a patrol car. She screamed and kicked the car door. That's when a deputy with the King County Sheriff's Office pulled out a Taser, pressed it against her thigh and jolted her with 50,000 volts of electricity....King County sheriff's deputies have fired Tasers at a teenager who ran after not paying a $1.25 bus fare, a 71-year-old man who was arrested for drunken driving and refused to get into a patrol car, and a partially deaf man who couldn't hear deputies ordering him to stop, reports show."

The video makes it look like this guy was just walking along when he gets hit with a 250lb sack of donuts and propelled into a wall.

If in reality there was a 2 1/2 block foot chase leading up to it, that’s different. This guy comes from the same direction as the cop that hit him, and was slowing down and turning to face the cop while bringing up his hands for some unknown purpose.

Lots of physics involved, not a lot of reaction time and probably not MENSA-level IQs on either side.

I feel sorry for the injured guy but once the chase is on it usually ends with a faceplant. This one just involved a wall first.

Wow...stupidity knows no bounds with some here. First, you deep in the woods anti-cop FReepers say that he is running because these guys chasing him are Ninja assassins (incredible)...then you say as these Ninjas are about to get him he decides to discard trash from his pocket???

There is no evidence of any drugs being involved here. The victim was not charged with any crime involving drugs, and there is no evidence that the police report contains information concerning drug possession or the sale or purchase of any drugs by the victim.

I see evidence of an officer using far more than the necessary amount of force.

What I DO NOT see is any evidence whatsoever that the victim was involved in any sort of drug crime. Someone please produce the EVIDENCE of this.

I would also be interested in knowing what why there are folks here who feel that the injuries received were justified because the victim was away from his home, or that he traveled by taxi, or because of who he lives with.

When our right to lawfully go about our business, where ever that business may take us is subject to question by the police, and when massive bodily injury is justified by the police and their supporters because we are not where the officer thinks we "SHOULD" be... then I fear for our society.

I am entertained by your posts, however. I'm amazed that you guys are constantly being allowed to create your own facts concerning the drugs:

Yeah that makes more sense than two obvious cops are chasing him and before he is lawfully apprehended he discards drugs from his pocket.

Then, even without knowing anything about the rest of us, but with our entire posting histories available at your fingertips, you come up with this little gem:

You guys are probably 9/11 conspiracy theorists as well.

Congratulations.

There is no evidence of any drugs being involved here.

Dude pays buddy $60 to drive him from Olympia to Seattle in the wee hours of the morning after getting off from his minimum wage night shift.

Dude is spotted in a dark alley in Seattle (Bellevue) and is ordered to stop (possible suspect in a fight)

Dude runs

Dude is seen on camera tossing packet from pocket just prior to being caught.

Who said they were justified. But, you go to Seattle at 1 AM to buy drugs in a dark alley and then run from the cops you have realize that you either outrun the cop or you get put down.

Fine. Where is the drug EVIDENCE?

I am not interested in police "gut feelings" or "hunches".

Either he was observed buying drugs (no evidence submitted), or he was found with drugs in his possession (still no evidence submitted), or the object he threw away was recovered and determined to be illegal drugs.... (wait for it...)

NO EVIDENCE SUBMITTED!

6 minutes, 6 days, 6 months, 6 years........doesn't matter.

People who look up registration dates have troubling issues.

Not even a good deflection of a reasonable question...
