Thousands of census workers, including many temporary employees, are fanning out across America to gather information on the citizenry. This is a process that takes place not only every decade in order to complete the constitutionally-mandated census; but also as part of the continuing American Community Survey conducted by the Census Bureau on a regular basis year in and year out.
What many Americans dont realize, is that census workers from the head of the Bureau and the Secretary of Commerce (its parent agency) down to the lowliest and newest Census employee are empowered under federal law to actually demand access to any apartment or any other type of home or room that is rented out, in order to count persons in the abode and for the collection of statistics. If the landlord of such apartment or other leased premises refuses to grant the government worker access to your living quarters, whether you are present or not, the landlord can be fined $500.00.
Thats right not only can citizens be fined if they fail to answer the increasingly intrusive questions asked of them by the federal government under the guise of simply counting the number of people in the country; but a landlord must give them access to your apartment whether youre there or not, in order to gather whatever statistics the law permits.
In fact, some census workers apparently are going even further and demanding and receiving private cell phone numbers from landlords in order to call tenants and obtain information from them. Isnt it great to live in a free country?
I assume you're talking about the Census people coming onto your property. My understanding is that they are allowed onto private property until they are asked to leave.
I drove onto a gentleman's land in the wayback in one of the early phases. He was offended, and didn't want me there. I told him that I worked for HIM, and that if he didn't want me there, all he had to do was ask me to leave.
He politely asked me to leave, and I politely wished him a good day, and left immediately. No need for rancor.
Thanks for your time, sir, and have a good day!
Opening the front door, I was amazed at how quickly the inquiring party wished to leave my premises.
Thus, I have made it a common practice to answer that particular summons in the same manner with the same results.
Oddly enough, there seems to be a corresponding drop in the number of doorbell ringers soliciting my business for cleaning, A/C optimizing, water purifying, lawn mowing, car washing, etc.
I guess word gets around.
Alas, I filled out my Census form and mailed it back already.

What part of “leave me alone” do you not understand?
we note on the form, it’s a seasonal home - if we can get the homeowner’s other address, we put it on the form, otherwise there’s just a box to check.
You had valid arguments, and one I would respond to but your last sentence tells all. Have a good day.
It hasn't been a free country for a long, long time.
America -- a great idea, didn't last.
I don’t believe this...
Thanks.
Oh please. This is rubbish... get over it.
Therein lies the entire problem...
"questions"...
No matter how I try, "How many persons live here?" always adds up to just one question...The only one I, personally, have ever answered over many decades...
"Do I have to talk to the census taker?
Yes. Your participation in the 2010 Census is vital and required by law, (Section 221, of Title 13 of the U.S. Code).
Oh! Oh! Will I still get my Soc Sec while I'm in the big house?
"However, rather than rely on criminal charges, the Census Bureau is very successful in getting participation by explaining the importance of the questions we ask and how the information benefits our communities. "
Unless, when this strategy is attempted, you ask the census worker to wait while you spread a plastic sheet on the floor, put on a pair of hip boots, and wear a painting mask. No sense having all that unmitigated B.S. mess up the rugs...
I don’t have to ask them to leave.
TITLE LXII CRIMINAL CODE, Criminal Trespass,
RSA 635:2 I, II, III (a) (b) (1) (2)
Memorandum of Law
CRIMINAL TRESPASS
A person commits the offense of criminal trespass when he or she enters or remains on property or in a building of another person without that person’s consent after he or she has been given notice that entry was forbidden or that he or she must depart.
The other person does not need to own the property in order to give notice to depart. The other person must only have a greater right of possession that the person who commits the offense.
Notice for purposes of the offense of criminal trespass may be conveyed by an oral or a written communication from an owner or from a person who has authority to act on behalf of the owner, by a fence or other enclosure, or by a sign.
You cannot slander one who exhibits the behavior I have subjected to.
If he had asked to be let in any ones apt. or for the cell numbers he would have been told to hit the road.
With your attitude, you'd best hope you encounter a forgiving Constitutional type like me.
Say, maybe you'll hit the jackpot, and end up harassing an American military veteran who's taken a temp job with the Census. You can feel like a real stud, then. Maybe you could spit on them, to remind them of their Lefty friends from the Nam days...
So, studboy - why don't you show the authorities who's boss, and stop paying your property taxes (aka Rent from the State)?
You'll find out REAL QUICK who the REAL OWNER of "your property" is, rentslave. So go ahead, put up all the "No Trespassing" signs you want, and puff your chest out about "your property". The rest of us know what a joke you are.
Oh, and when you call your Lords and Masters about one of their "parasites" skulking about on "your land", just remember they're getting a good laugh about your delusions down at the stationhouse. They'll let you keep your fantasy just as long as you keep coughing up your rent like a good little slave...
Another sick day in your life? Don’t stroke out.
