Frau Germania: How Angela Merkel's selfishness is killing Europe.
Foreign Policy ^ | May 24, 2010 | Cameron Abadi

Posted on 05/26/2010 10:59:45 AM PDT by C19fan

These are unhappy days for Europe: Countries are starving for credit, international experts are predicting the slow unraveling of the euro, and the continent's national politicians have felt compelled to defend their honor by way of references to belligerent incidents from the not-so-distant European past. And the unhappiest European at the moment may be the person most trusted to lead the European Union out of its turmoil: Angela Merkel, Germany's chancellor, who, caught between the dual masters of a dissatisfied German public and a roiling EU, lurched in too many directions and finally froze in place as the crisis progressed. Merkel's abdication of Germany's leadership in the EU over the past few months ranks as a catastrophe of the worst order: wreaking maximum political damage on everyone involved, while also risking continued long-term chaos.

Basically this author thinks Germany should just bend over and take it. What is funny the author quotes the SPD-Green former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer critizing Merkel then the author states that the vote in the Reichstag for the ultimate bailout was a party line vote when it was the SPD and Greens who voted No.

How Angela Merkel's selfishness is killing Europe.

I guess any fiscal conservative now-a-days is considered to be a selfish chump. People and gvt can go ahead and be irresponsible under the knowledge that there's always going to be someone to bail them out. Reminds me of the old Aesop fable of the cricket and the ant.

You are acting "selfishly" whenever you don't let totalitarian globalists have their selfish way.

You know, what is a national politician to do when a continental utopianist plan collapses that she had no input to? Do you think the German public would stand still either politically or economically if Merkel was say she was covering all European bets? First, Germans would sell their Euros for Dollars, Swiss Francs, and Pounds, next they would vote her out. This author lives in another universe.

The word selfishness in the title tells us everything we need to know.

So do the Euros want Germany to run Europe or not? They spent the last hundred years saying “no”, but now they’re crying for a handout. Maybe the Germans should ask for the territory that was taken from them in 1945. Then they can consider a bailout.

I’m beginning to think that the word “greed” was invented by those without any ability to produce things so that they can explain why they just can’t hack it. (Nope, I’m not including those who are genuinely hindered physically or mentally. I do include liberals who - interestingly enough, are indeed hindered mentally.)

Earth to idiot lib writer: Germans produce things. Things that work. Things that we like. Greece produces nothing. Hasn’t done so for at least 2000 years.

"Merkel made some stunningly bad decisions, too, displaying a striking lack of understanding about the limits of German power. It's true that Germany is the most powerful country in Europe. But Germany needs the EU just as much as the EU needs Germany: German power isn't much good if the country is constantly engaged in negative-sum relations with its many neighbors. "

This is simply wishful thinking. The only mistake Merkel made was caving to the spendthrift socialists in the rest of the EU.

To suggest Germany needs anything for the EU construct is pure fantasy...the EU only restrains German success.

Angie

Angie, Angie, when will those clouds all disappear?
Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here?
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You can't say we're satisfied
But Angie, Angie, you can't say we never tried
Angie, you're beautiful, but ain't it time we said good-bye?
Angie, I still love you, remember all those nights we cried?
All the dreams we held so close seemed to all go up in smoke
Let me whisper in your ear:
Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here?

Oh, Angie, don't you weep, all your kisses still taste sweet I hate that sadness in your eyes
But Angie, Angie, ain't it time we said good-bye?
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You can't say we're satisfied
But Angie, I still love you, baby
Ev'rywhere I look I see your eyes
There ain't a woman that comes close to you
Come on Baby, dry your eyes
But Angie, Angie, ain't it good to be alive?
Angie, Angie, they can't say we never tried

“Things that work. Things that we like.”

Actually, Ouzo works pretty good;) But seriously, it’s hard to build an economy on wine and cheese and at the same time ensuring that your fellow citizens can retire comfortably at 50.
