An animal welfare group said Tuesday that a graphic video it secretly recorded shows workers at a dairy farm beating cows with crowbars, stabbing them with pitchforks and punching them in their heads.
The video was recorded in an undercover investigation at Conklin Dairy Farms Inc., said Mercy For Animals, a not-for-profit group that publicizes what it calls cruel practices in the dairy, meat and egg industries and promotes a vegan diet.

I swallowed that without comment too early. I’m not sure I agree. If he encourages it or knowingly condones it, probably. If he didn’t condone it and didn’t know, probably not.
Do you have a reference that “that’s the law”?
By the way — are you sure the guy they finger as the owner of the farm really IS the owner?

Sure does. Still, try as I might, I can't find a single mention of it - not in court, not in scientific literature, and not in news. You'd think the labs would have publicized something like this, wouldn't you?
A hired hand treating stock in this manner would soon get similar treatment as he left his job. Livestock and dairy producers don’t handle their stock like this. I smell a RAT here.
The fact that this video was released to the MSM sends up red flags for me. It might be real but it also could be real and staged.
Animal rights wackos have been targeting farmers for years. A video isn’t evidence anymore than a movie is. I prefer to wait and see.
It just dawned upon me; this video was taken by a conspirator. Hidden videos don’t get changed shots, closeups that back out and follow an actor etc.
For God's sake, I'm the guy who used the word "alleged," ok? We can't have a conversation if you insist on going into mental vapor-lock.
In any case, in the clip where he appears, he might simply be trying to get that cow to stand up. Tough luck . . . maybe he shouldn't have been filmed.
Now, for the legal side of things: if a prosecutor finds that a law has been violated, the owner can be hauled into court under the doctrine of respondeat superior. Then it will become an issue for the jury.
And the Supreme Court recently ruled that videos showing the abuse of animals are just hunky-dory. Which, I guess, means that abusing animals is OK, too. Makes me want to throw up.
The farmer knows that healthy cows produce better and he keeps an eye on the state of his herd. A worker knows that the boss will be inspecting teh herd and will find out who was mistreating his property and will deal with it.
I bet this is a staged video (like most of them are) just seeking to advance the leftists goals.
On the flip side, if the people doing the abusing OWN the animals, then who are we to say what they can do with their own property.
Don't forget, the prosecutor may not be able to find a law being violated. In which case, the owner of this farm is still stupid beyond words for getting himself into a public-relations nightmare.

To be really fair, I’d say both of our fuel lines might be overheating a bit.
I’m not suggesting you “forget about it”. That was hyperbole on your part. I am suggesting a bit of skepticism as to what the MFA group implies is going on, and I stand by that.

Of course. Anyone can sue for anything, and most decent prosecutors can get a ham sandwich indicted, if they’re so inclined. But the reality is somewhat short of the terse “it’s the law” slam-dunk you claimed at first, no?
Sending stuff out to the media is what they do. I don’t want anyone convicted before a fair trial either, and it is a tricky area. Farming is a dangerous business as it is, without minute by minute legal worries.
Obviously, animal rights extremists have crossed the line into murderous eco-terrorism in some instances. But that doesn’t mean that their entire cause is always wrong. There are real abuses with how chickens and hogs, particularly, have been farmed in recent decades—and that should be righted.
You’ll have to find me a jurisdiction in the United States where employers are not on the hook for what their employees do. It’s the law.
You must not have watched the video. It made me ill to see it and I had to stop. I was thinking “oh yeah, it’s probably not that bad” but it IS that bad.
I’ve never seen a human being treat a dumb animal this badly. I’ve seen some violence and cruelty, but never this bad, not ever.
The first time through I was pissed and horrified. Going through the second time I can see that the "hand" was playing to the camera. I've seen hundreds, probably thousands, of these low IQ goobers who, once you get them started will do anything to show how tough or uncaring they can be. They would beat their wife or kids to a pulp just as easily and grin all the while. The three second cut of the owner is nothing out of the ordinary until you splice it in with the absolute barbarity of the loser.
I think that the "hand" should do time along with the cameraman who goaded him to do this.
One of the most dangerous things that you can do today in America is to hire an employee. The chances are good that you will end up with something like this moron to one degree or another.
No that’s not how scientists operate. They never seem to recognize the importance of public relations and defending what they do or that they’re part of a larger attack. I used to have access to all the journals but now I’m down to just Science mag. They will occasionally have animal rights attacks and legislation updates but only if a new situation arises.
So if my employee goes home and murders his neighbor I go to prison for it? I don't think so.
The law does not hold the employer accountable for illegal activity at his place of business UNLESS he knows about it and does not stop it. Even something as simple as a sexual harassment case must prove that the employer knew the harassment was occurring
