WINFIELD, Mo. - Mexican drug smugglers are increasingly peddling a form of ultra-potent heroin that sells for as little as $10 a bag and is so pure it can kill unsuspecting users instantly, sometimes before they even remove the syringe from their veins.
An Associated Press review of drug overdose data shows that so-called "black tar" heroin named for its dark, gooey consistency and other forms of the drug are contributing to a spike in overdose deaths across the nation and attracting a new generation of users who are caught off guard by its potency.
"We found people who snorted it lying face-down with the straw lying next to them," said Patrick O'Neil, coroner in suburban Chicago's Will County, where annual heroin deaths have nearly tripled from 10 to 29 since 2006. "It's so potent that we occasionally find the needle in the arm at the death scene."

Do you know the numbers?
I'm certainly not doubting heroin addicts having family, friends...I know that.
I also know enablers that help addicts...I've seen them with my own eyes. ( People in hospitals to get well....but beg family/friends to "help" them...Yeah I have seen thaT..)
Don't try and put words in my mouth...please.
Just because I made some rational points...to what I thought were in error statements..doesn't mean I don't care.
FRegards,
As sad as this sounds, it is hard to see a downside. I don’t think we are loosing some Einsteins, maybe, some lawyers, but, that is a good thing.
And they want legalize drugs.
I could make more brilliant albums....
....but I think instead I'll just keep touring on the same four studio albums from twenty years ago, forever, to support my methedrine habit.
SHould the punishment for texting while driving be death (instead of a ticket)?
Here's to obscure War of 1812 references!
The WOP was a Democratic talking point.
(LBJ)
The WOP was a liberal trap to break down the tradional black family and enslave them in welfare dependent gubmint programs.
Obscure but important history that needs some teachin.
Stinks to be a family member when an addict family member breaks into your home and steals whatever she can quickly convert into her next hit. If I could catch her entering I would have her arrested so fast her head would spin, but, of course, your family member usually knows your schedule, especially if you work for a living and have to go to an office five days a week.
Just read about it the other day. Both Gordon Wood’s “Empire of Liberty” (which I am currently reading) and Walter Borneman’s “1812” talk about it.
There’s a very good reason why they call it ‘dope’.
Gotta wonder whatever happened to Claire and Spiggy the Cat.
I live on the far upstream banks of the river and just started looking into the history of the area and discovered it. I found that the river was named due to the jungle of wild grape vines that still exist across the area today.
That led me to discovering that My little town was named after Michigan’s first senator. From there I found that he and Thomas Jefferson were pen pals in a sense.
I do love history.
You sure got that right. I remember listening to the news in DC reporting some story on a particularly potent batch of heroin that was making the rounds and filling up DC General with overdose victims. The reporter would warn the audience to stay away from the bags marked "White Death" that were being sold near 7th and O. Within an hour, the area would be crawling with junkies trying to score some.
I suspect so, but it will get our capital "L" Libertarian friends upset.
“Spiggy’s gone to the great lig in the sky.”
Why would you think that? One of the cornerstones of libertarianism is that YOU suffer the consequences of your own actions. That your stupidity doesn’t necessarily translate into a burden on the rest of society like it does under our current Socialist Nanny State.
A couple things in this article are making my spidey sense tingle.
-The issue of “pure” heroin isn’t a new one at all. I remember reading an article - in 1987 - talking about the difference between heroin during the days of “The French Connection” and present day (again, 1987). The alarm was being sounded because the 25% (on average) pure stuff of the 60’s and early 70’s had given way to as much as 90% pure smack, at far lower prices.
-I’m also wondering about the other 10-40% in this 60-90% pure heroin. Of course overdose is always possible, especially if the stuff you’re injecting is two or three times stronger than you’re expecting. However, it’s also possible that there is an adulterant at work here. There was a rash of deaths on the east coast back in the early 1990s associated with a batch of heroin nicknamed “Tango and Cash”. As it turns out, the heroin had been mixed with fentanyl tranquilizers, which was causing cardiac arrest. If there currently are users dying within seconds of consumption, it could be something else is in the mix along with the heroin (which, admittedly, is dangerous enough).
Ya, that make a lot of noise about cutting off welfare, but they want the Third World here to vote for 'Nannystaters'.
