Just read about it the other day. Both Gordon Wood’s “Empire of Liberty” (which I am currently reading) and Walter Borneman’s “1812” talk about it.

I live on the far upstream banks of the river and just started looking into the history of the area and discovered it. I found that the river was named due to the jungle of wild grape vines that still exist across the area today.

That led me to discovering that My little town was named after Michigan’s first senator. From there I found that he and Thomas Jefferson were pen pals in a sense.

I do love history.
