Activity is definitively up in that desert area and this appears to be a newer area of action, it’s been going on for months since that 7+ big quake was further south in Mexico and that area has calmed down for the most part.

I see this quake has been downgraded to 4.9 wouldn’t surprise me to see it upgraded back in the 5 range. Felt like a 5. A slight initial heads up tremor then five seconds of shaking in the house and smaller faint shake followed up.

Typical but it’s been a more frequent occurrence. I swear fault activity is moving north but your guess is as good as mine in this inexact science. No damage around me but it can vary widely depending on your location or the type of earth you are sitting on.

The accidental filling of the Salton sink is an interesting story. The Salton Sea would dry up if it weren’t for the valley’s irrigation draining to the low spot, leeching the chemicals used in farming along with the water.

A satellite shot shows all the farmland plots in the Imperial Valley extending southward well into Mexico. At one time the Imperial Valley area was the most productive farmland in the world. I would think if you included the Mexican farmland, it still is and still enlarging.

I just wish there were more earthquakes along the Mexican border which would create a one mile wide canal from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. We will name the new waterway the American Channel.

I was thinking the same thing..a nice natural barrier would be sweet

The 1994 Northridge Earthquake (January 17, 1994 which measured 6.7 on the Richter Scale) was in the San Fernando Valley. According to the HBO series “Porn Valley,” nearly 90% of all legally distributed pornographic films made in the United States are either filmed in or produced by studios based in the San Fernando Valley.

So it might just happen.

I’m here in Calsbad, and I report them to “Did you Feel It” at USGS.

Windows have been rattling all morning.

The shaker itself (along with the aftershock) was strong, even 80 miles away.

I have been feeling subtle ones all week.

Here’s what I think is happening.

These are on an extension of the southern San Andreas fault.
Stress is being relieved but the adjustments haven’t been made farther north.

I truly would not be surprised to see a major, major quake in the Coachella Valley, which is well overdue.

It could even spring the “bent leg” segment up in San Bernardino where it passed under the I-10 in Colton.

That would be The Big One in SoCal.

You clowns are just as sick.

You better hope better people than you don't also wish bad things to happen to you and your loved ones.

BTW, how many times did you watch that HBO special on porn?

“And the blob south of highway 10 is a secret military base?”

As stated above the Salton Sea. However to the East of the Salton Sea is the Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Range operated by the US Navy. It is very active as I just spent the best part of a week camping on the Northern border and watchng the fireworks.

Wouldn’t it be neat if a huge crack developed along the border, and the ocean filled it up. Talk about a border fence!

What is it about the river holding back the earthquake swarm? I’ve been wondering about that. Perhaps it is reinforced with concrete along there?...

I never saw it. I just did some research look for info on Northridge, CA. Northridge is the porn capitol of the USA and the epicenter of that quake did right in that town. Coincidence? I tend to say ‘no.’ Would I be surprised if San Fransicko gets hit with another 1906-level EQ? Not a bit. Do I hope so. Sure? That’ll turn the city conservative real quick.
