An intact pair of 'torpedo propellers’ recovered, engraving style analyzed ... U.S. and Australian experts also agree
(Torpedo) exploded 3 meters under the turbine room... Cheonan's lost engine room found

Government source said on May 18, "Cheonan was sunk by a torpedo and we found a smoking gun that proves that it is made in N. Korea, after intensive investigation in recent days by civilian-military team."

The investigation team recently recovered relatively intact torpedo propellers on the sea bottom where Cheonan went down. They analyzed the serial number engraved on the propellers and concluded that it is in N. Korean typeface and engraving style. The government sources said, "Experts from other countries such as U.S. and Australia also agree that the torpedo was made in N. Korea based on the analysis on propeller’s serial number. This is conclusive evidence, coming after finding of torpedo debris and explosive trace."

This is one of the theories floating around in SK, while prevailing local consensus is that he was kicked out to make room for designated successor's crony.

However, since such public announcement of sacking is pretty unusual, something terrible may be waiting for him.

You can expect lots more belligerence from North Korea now that they have a nuke. You will see more incidents like this attack. They are one of the most (if not the most) evil regimes in the world and they aren’t not going to stop with this single attack. The US ships in the area ought to be on full alert and ready for an attack. We must put nothing past these crazy fools. They might try anything now. Don’t be surprised if they take a shot a US ship or plane. In fact I’d be surprised if they don’t do something like this just to test Obama. Joe Biden is a buffoon but like the blind pig, he managed to get an acorn saying that a country will test Obama. Stay tuned.

A North Korean submarine is about to be sniped by South Korea. It will all look like an “accident!”

Chosun Ilbo put up an English article on this.

Serial Number of Torpedo Traced to N.Korea

Investigators have found at the 11th hour found a desperately needed smoking gun linking North Korea to the sinking of the Navy corvette Cheonan, a government official claimed Tuesday. Investigators apparently discovered a propeller from the torpedo that likely sank the ship in relatively good condition in waters where it sank and the serial number inscribed on it is North Korean.

“U.S., Australian and other foreign experts who took part in the investigation agree that a North Korean torpedo caused the Cheonan to sink and that this is the smoking gun following various pieces of the torpedo and traces of gun powder that had been gathered so far,” the official said.

Another government source said fishing trawlers deployed in gathering evidence found a fairly intact torpedo propeller buried in the mud at the bottom of the ocean over the weekend. “It's a double propeller that obviously comes from a torpedo,” the source added. Investigators apparently compared the propeller to one attached to a North Korean training torpedo that the South Korean military obtained seven years ago and proved that the two were made of similar materials.

Torpedoes are powered by two sets of propellers that rotate in opposite directions. Investigators are said to have conducted a computerized simulation and reached a tentative conclusion that a 250 kg, mid-sized sonar-tracking torpedo exploded 3 m below the gas turbine room of the vessel. They have apparently proved that the traces of explosives found on the Cheonan are similar to some of the propellants used in the sample North Korean torpedo.

The military has transported to a Navy base in Pyeongtaek the diesel engine of the Cheonan, which had been separated from the vessel during the explosion, and is looking for traces of gunpowder. The gas turbine has also been found on the sea floor and authorities are planning to hoist it out of the water.

And billions in political payoff to put into his nuclear program....again

I suppose it’s not impossible that the Chinese had a
North Korean torpedo and set this up, but I can’t see
the reasoning for it, unless it was to create chaos within
the north korean leading cadres as face is lost and
people are accused, it would be cut throat and destroy
the transition.??

The Nork response will be interesting, glad I don’t live
there.

It doesn’t matter, South Korea’s president is as big a coward as Obastard.

The guy has been completely hoodwinked by Kim Jong-il, and he is under political pressure to act tough. The initial response from him and his aide was a complete disbelief. His team and N. Koreans were working on the deal to have another inter-Korean summit and they are led to believe that the deal was almost sealed. There is local election in Jun. 2. I am sure he will stay tough until the election day. If his party wins, I don't know what his action afterward will be. If N. Korea presses on with other provocative moves(which is likely,) he has no choice but to remain tough.

In short, he can be made tough(on N. Korea) not by nature but by pressure from others.

NK seems to have been spoiling for a fight for some time. The natives may be getting restless. It is not uncommon for despots to stir up trouble to distract the populace and show them how much they need the Deer Leader.

Yes, they need ‘an engineered crisis’ now. As you said, domestic situation is pretty bad now after botched currency reform.
The engineered crises were also instrumental in installing Kim Jong-il as his dad's successor in 70’s. It was used to rally people around the regime and by extension its designated successor.

“North Korea actually WANTS a big stink”

I tend to agree. Sure thrashing about is lots of fun, I guess. But the really critical spin out of this is; now this stone age country has managed to man a submersible, pilot to strike, and escape clean. One inescapable clue as to how that could happen lies in that South Korea commissioned (a couple dozen) Pohang class corvettes back in the mid 80s. They are old, poorly equipped, sitting ducks, and if they are any measure of SKs hopes to remain a free nation (living next to a rabid jackal); then the South is in line for a series of rude suppresses.

Maybe this will freeze all UN aid to North Korea.

Without UN Aid and Chinese Aid that dictatorship would fall in 30-90 days.

Seoul offered to tell Beijing of its findings in advance, but Beijing declined the offer citing procedural problems.

China says it can only attend a briefing that is completely closed to the public.

China is trying to decline advance notification of the findings from South Korea using complicated excuses, which gives a clue to China's general attitude.

China's Democratic Party leaders appear bent on denying North Korean involvement in the sinking.

I guess Dear Leader was pissed off that the world isn’t giving him the respect he DESERVES as the head of a nuclear North Korea. He is not having much success shaking down the hardline president of the ROK and the rest of the world is tired of his antics.

SK media reports that Chia, Japan, and Russia were given briefings on May 18th. Off the publice in closed doors. So China got their closed-door briefing. Does not mean that China has accepted the finding. Their official line is still that there is no evidence for NK involvement, as far as I know.

A predictable response from China. No surprise here. The benefit would be not that it could somehow persuade China but that it convincingly shattered hopes of those who vainly expected China's 'earnest' cooperation on this matter. I think we would no longer have misguided day-dreamers hampering decision-making process in Seoul and D.C.

the respect he DESERVES as the head of a nuclear North Korea.

Actually that is one of the key components for justifying his rule. He also wants to show that this policy would also solve its economic problem, securing long-term subsidy from its neighbors.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Xinsen did not attend the briefing but sent charge d'affaires Xing Haiming instead. That decision was not made by Zhang himself but came from Beijing.

Japan, Russia, and the United States all sent their ambassadors, it was an obvious slight.

China won't be leading the charge against NK.
