Report: Blumenthal (D-Connecticut) lied about military service
The Torrington Register Citizen ^ | May 17, 2010

Did attorney general and senate hopeful Richard Blumenthal ever serve in Vietnam? Well, no. But according to The New York Times, Blumenthal is suggesting the opposite.

Blumenthal also claims he served as the Captain of the Harvard swim team, despite records at the college showing that he was never on the team.

“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam,” Blumenthal said to a group gathered in Norwalk in March 2008. But Blumehthal according to the Times, obtained five military deferments from 1965 to 1970 and took steps to avoid going to war.

“In 1970, with his last deferment in jeopardy, he enlisted in the Marine Reserve, landing a coveted spot in a unit in Washington, D.C., which virtually guaranteed that he would not be sent to Vietnam. The unit conducted part-time drills and other exercises and focused on local projects, like fixing a campground and organizing a Toys for Tots drive,” The Times report says.

The paper asked the attorney general about the contrast, and Blumenthal reportedly responded that he had misspoken.

“My intention has always been to be completely clear and accurate and straightforward, out of respect to the veterans who served in Vietnam,” he told the paper in an interview.

But The Times goes on to list several speeches during which it suggests Blumenthal misled his audience about his military career.

Tomorrow our CT service men and women come home from Afghanistan and Iraq.
Don’t think he should show up at the airport, but he will with his service people around. Shame.

Will Blumenthal also have to drop out?

He's a Dem, they get away with lying, even when caught red lipped as it were.

If he was an (R), he'd be dropping out within the week.

Not to be crude, but this is great. I was worried when Dodd backed out but now the seat is winnable.

What a despicable thing to claim. Purposely avoiding service and then trying to lump himself in with the true heroes who actually did sacrifice is flat out dishonorable.

For him to make such a claim is no different than if someone made up an outrageous lie claiming that they were a NYC firefighter who saved hundreds of lives from the burning twin towers. There's no difference.

Hopefully some veterans' group will condemn his remarks. The press certainly won't, he's a lying Rat and will get a pass.

Blumenthal reportedly responded that he had misspoken.

That's liberal speak for: "I got caught in a lie".

I used to be married to this jerk Blumenthal, and he left me and our five little children under 4 years old on the street corner and drove off to be with his new sweetie. It was late at night too and I had no money and no home.

Oh wait, I misspoke, I didn’t mean I actually KNEW Blumenthal. I meant to say I actually lived in a nice home and my kids were safe and secure.
Who could not make a mistake like that, the stories are almost identical.

Hmmm....couldn’t we start a “Campaign for the Best Liar for Senate” effort and “help” Blumenthal?

Since we know he’s a 4-star liar...lets just add to it: (1) he was the second man on the moon, (2) he was the next man after John Travolta for Saturday Night Fever, (3) he had a Kenyan father like Obama, (4) he gave Bill Gates the idea for Microsoft, and (5) he wrote all 2,700 pages of the universal health bill.

Put it on a YouTube video clip and just blast away. Then you come back two weeks later with five real facts on the guy and ask which are truthful and which are lies. At that point...people will start to laugh and label the guy a comedian more than a political figure. He loses respect and loses votes. It’s simple to bring this guy down three notches.

Who's "we"? Whoever it is, they did such a great job that Dodd was elected to the House three times, and to the Senate five times.

I am referring to the tea party movement in Connecticut. It was an excellent job given the movement didn't start until February 2009. In less than a year we forced him out.

Good work hounding him out of office, Connecticut!

Have you been living in a cave? Dodd announced in January he would not seek reelection! That is why Blumenthal is running!

“Hell avoiding military service and lying about Viet Nam will push him over the top in Connecticut!”

Yeah. His poll number just shot up 5 points on the news. So sad, but true.

Any honorable person would. But Blumenthal is a Democrat.
