DETROIT - A spokesperson for the Detroit Police Department says a 7-year-old girl named Ayana Jones was accidently shot and killed by a DPD officer.

Watch the latest video report by Fox 2's Roop Raj.

It happened in the 4000 block of Lillibridge at 12:40 Sunday morning. According to Detroit Police , officers went to the house to arrest a murder suspect, with a valid search warrant.

The suspect was wanted in another crime that happened on Friday in Detroit. A 17-year-old high school student was shot and killed in front of a party store. They had reason to believe the man inside the home on Lillibridge was the gunman in that murder.

So you are saying the officer was resisting arrest?

Had they politely knocked on the door and the perp took the little girl hostage and she gets killed, the cops would be criticized for not doing a dynamic entry. It's real easy to criticize after the fact. The cops at Columbine were criticized for not charging in guns blazing, which in hindsight is exactly what they should have done.

Your post ignores too much.

First, if you are harboring a murderer and he takes you hostage, it is only your own fault. Not the police.

Second, if a killing spree is underway (Columbine), police should not wait outside for the killing to end, they should intervene.

The problem most FReepers have is that the police use aggressive, over-the-top force when surrounding and knocking would be sufficient and then those same police will standby outside and do nothing while a gunman (gunmen) kill innocents inside a building.

Looks probable that the suspect was in a different apartment than the one where the child was shot:

Godbee didn't say if the suspect in Blake's slaying was arrested in the downstairs or upstairs apartment. Godbee said, "The suspect was within the scope of our search warrant." He added that the warrant allowed police to search both units.

Police retract the "struggled with" claim:

The police initially claimed Jones was shot after her grandmother had an altercation with one of the officers. They now say the contact with the grandmother was incidental and the gun discharged accidentally.

The little girl wasn't harboring anybody.

I have never seen any proof the cops knew a killing spree was in progress at Columbine.

I agree the issue is not a simple one. My primary point is that the proper course is always obvious in hindsight. Not so much at the time.

I’m of the opinion that a rapid forced entry is not required in at least 75% (maybe even 90%) of the cases that it is used. Put enough officers around the house to prevent an escape, and go up to the door, knock politely and serve the search warrant.

It works as the first step and it has worked for years. For the small percent that decides to resist, or when no one comes to he door, then you can DECIDE if it is appropriate to escalate to a forced entry. You might decide to wait out the perp.

However it wasn’t his fault, ‘the gun went off.’

the primer, the case, they were all in it together.”

Nya-ah, it was the extremist firing pin, acting alone.

Not a lot of data to make decisions on in the article. Articles like this are often written to stir up the community or influence the potential jury.

What a horrible thing, for everyone involved.

As I understand it, the house was divided into at least 2 apartments. This occured in the downstairs flat, while the suspect was arrested later in the upstairs apartment. Yet the morning radio news jokers were reporting that “the suspect was later arrested in the home.” I don’t know what story is true, so I give no reporters credibility.

On another note, I heard a rumor that “The First 48” series was filming and may have some of this incident on video.....

“Until I see evidence to make me think otherwise, I say it’s a tragic accident.”

It probably was an “accident” in that sense. However, the next time you kill somebody by accident, see if your not charged with homicide...

This looks more suited to the “I’m going to kick your ass, and get away with it” pic or perhaps a modified version that says “I’m going to bust a cap in your ass...”

The little girl wasn't harboring anybody.

No, but her guardian was.

I have never seen any proof the cops knew a killing spree was in progress at Columbine.

Then you should not comment.

So the cops throw in a flash bang and take the door. Instead of the mother immediately going over to protect her kid, she gets into a physical altercation with the cop and the gun goes off.

Oh, and they were harboring a murder suspect. This is something the cop will never get over.

“But a mother who is keeping her 7 year old daughter in a home with a murderer certainly has to bear some of the responsibility for a tragedy like this.”

There is at least a couple different versions in the local news. Last night this “house” was divided into apartments and the girl was killed in “the downstairs flat” while the murder suspect was later arrested in the “upstairs apartment.” This morning all the news is saying is that the “murder suspect was later arrested in the home.”

I don’t know which version is true and maybe we will never know, but if there was different apartments in that “house” then the mother was not living with the murder suspect in the same “home.”

I suspect the news is playing with words so as not to offend the police that are currently mourning the loss of Officer Huff a couple of weeks ago.

I think I scared a few folks with that one last time. Definitely ruffled some feathers. But it is apropos.
