American Eagle Changes Employee Policy to be Trans Friendly (AG Andrew Cumo forces compliance)

After a battle with New York Attorney General Andrew Cumo, the clothing retail chain American Eagle has changed its policies to be more transgender friendly. According to the NY Daily News, the company is “nixing a rule about employee ‘personal appearance’ that banned men from wearing women’s clothing and ladies from dressing as guys.” The retailer has also agreed to train employees to be sensitive to transgender issues, including using preferred pronouns by transgender individuals.

Of course, anti-gay “family values” groups like the Family Research Council are starting to frame this as a policy that victimizes employers. According to a statement released today, they said:

Every American who believes in the right of employers to set dress and grooming standards for their employees should be alarmed by how this attorney general has used bullying tactics and litigation to impose cross-dressing policies on American Eagle Outfitters.

What’s most alarming is that President Obama and the Democratic leadership in Congress want to expand these bullying litigation tactics to all 50 states by enacting into federal law a cross-dressing protection act. If Congress approves President Obama’s ENDA bill, employers in every state can expect to experience the same expensive, burdensome litigation that has been pursued against American Eagle Outfitters.

But as we pointed out recently, ENDA will help employees by providing other legal protections that employees already receive against discrimination based on race, gender, or religion.

This is what is coming people. They'll dress in your face no matter what. Since when did employers not have the right within reason to set dress codes? These social issues represent just as much an attack on our liberties as the fiscal irresponsibility and horrid tax code. One takes our money the other prevents us from exercising a preference or having a policy that does not align with glbt activists.

Maybe they should change the name of the company to American Buzzard...because as far as I’m concerned, this company is dead and just waiting to be consumed as carrion.

At least they fought the policy. When the government takes out the legal big guns on you, it’s hard to fight back. That’s why our founders hated big government - they always tend eventually to tyranny.

Companies like Levi’s in CA actively court and work for “progressive” and gay causes. That’s a company I wouldn’t consider buying from.

I’m totally confused. Businesses can refuse to hire smokers and that is cheered. But a company has the entire weight of the government to force them to change their dress code?

I can't buy from them anymore - they wrecked the best jeans on the planet, the 501s. The changed the cut to something skin tight on a 19 year old meth addict that still slips off his ass, changed the fabric to something so thin and cheesy that it rips in six months, and changed the wash to something with old motor oil in it.

No thanks.

This is the craziest s**t ever. And bizarre stuff like this is happening all over the place these days.

In Maine, a 5th grade boy sued to use the girls bathroom in school. He won. His parents are apparently torturing him with hormones.
