Congressman Collin Peterson, a moderate Democrat who represents the 7th District of Minnesota, wants to prohibit the 39 million monthly users of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)-- which the federal Food Stamp Program has been called since Oct. 1, 2008 -- from using their electronic benefits transfer card from buying soft drinks with sugar.
The average American who reads that will say "Food Stamp recipients can buy Pepsi with my money?"
And the answer is of course, you silly person. Not only Pepsi and Coke and Gatorade but cocktail mixes, artificial sweetener, warm bread from the bakery, hoagies from the deli and stuffed olives from the salad bar.
Peterson suggestion is motivated more by concern about America's poor being too fat -- what a country as Yakov Smirnoff might say -- than a desire to encourage them to find jobs, but I'll walk this path with him.

What about dog food? Can you use food stamps to buy dog food?
Ya know, I think actually agree with him.
I’d exclude all dessert items, too. Food stamps should be for staples: bread, fruit, vegetables, milk, meat, flour, sugar, etc.
Not soda, ice cream, chips and cookies.
ROFL! And you're in the know? Sure. Share with us what it is you know. Good grief, what a bunch of nonsense.
Nope, and there was an anectdotal story I heard about a woman being outraged by this who told the clerk to take the dogfood back and get her 5 lbs of lean hamburger instead.
I agree with him 100 percent. I don’t mind keeping someone from starving. I do mind being forced to buy him soda pop.
I have long suspected the obesity/diet drink connection based solely on my own observation. More interesting is that the Air Force Flight Surgeon banned USAF pilots from drinking diet soda because of neurological/brain issues. I believe some of the fake sugars are poison, partially based on that report.
Drinks containing no calories lead to weight gain. Got it.

Yes, at one time some people believed that the phenylalanine and aspartic acid from aspartame could cause seizures. I wonder if they also believe that consuming these two amino acids naturally, from the food we eat every day, could also cause seizures. Ignorant people claim ignorant things. I recall one commercial pilot who claimed he lost his job because aspartame caused him to suffer a seizure in flight. During a test, he drank 10 cans of diet coke in one sitting but never experienced any ill effects. Why this ingredient causes seizures in a can of diet soda but not when we get the same chemicals that occur naturally in the food we eat every day is something no one can seem to explain.

Feelings are just that, feelings. When you get some proof, based on sound science, you can make a case that artificial sweeteners are poison. Until then, it's just feelings.
Something tells me that what you have to share wouldn’t take up much of my time. Suit yourself. You do have an opinion, though. At least that’s something.
Wow! I didn’t know you could buy “crap” with food stamps? Shouldn’t you only be able to buy “real” food via governement assistance?? Crazy world we live in.
Crap= AKA junk food and things that have little nutritional value for instance doghnuts and snackcakes.
Exactly if they want cookies they can use the flour eggs sugar and peanutbutter to make them themselves! Cake is the same way a little more work but none of the stuff that is awful for you in it.
I drank a lot of diet soda from about the age of 9 until about 6-7 years ago when I just quit. It was never by choice I am a type 1 diabetic who was diagnoised at 9yo. I drink no soda now at all. Iced tea with nothing in it is very refreshing. I love using the sun to make it with too because I think it gives it a touch of sweetness.
It's amazing what some people will believe.
LOL. You don’t seem to be all that concerned about your time. You appear to have plenty of it to waste on this forum offering nothing of substance. You’re the diet soda of brain food.
I don’t mind if you feel the need to label some of us as ‘ignorant people.’ Your opinion of me is none of my business. Since you seem to believe you are the sharpest TOOL in the room, why don’t you back up your credibility with your nutritionist/dietitian/molecular biologist credentials, other than the one you listed on your about page “5 years of liberal indoctrination by the Cal-State University system.”
A good start. The food stamp program should not include any snack/junk/processed foods of any kind. If you want that stuff, go the hell out and work for it.
