Congressman Wants To Exclude Non-Diet Soda Pop From Food Stamps

Congressman Collin Peterson, a moderate Democrat who represents the 7th District of Minnesota, wants to prohibit the 39 million monthly users of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)-- which the federal Food Stamp Program has been called since Oct. 1, 2008 -- from using their electronic benefits transfer card from buying soft drinks with sugar.

The average American who reads that will say "Food Stamp recipients can buy Pepsi with my money?"

And the answer is of course, you silly person. Not only Pepsi and Coke and Gatorade but cocktail mixes, artificial sweetener, warm bread from the bakery, hoagies from the deli and stuffed olives from the salad bar.

Peterson suggestion is motivated more by concern about America's poor being too fat -- what a country as Yakov Smirnoff might say -- than a desire to encourage them to find jobs, but I'll walk this path with him.

We have unemployment at 10%, Europe is drowning in debt (as are we) giant oil spill in the gulf, but let’s make sure people don’t drink Coke or Pepsi.

Why don’t we just end the food stamp program altogether and just give hungry people healthy food instead?

In reality there should probably only be a few dozen products that you are allowed purchase with food stamps.

Pepsi is gay. Yeah, we live in interesting times. Nancy told me to pursue my passion and let the taxpayers buy my healthcare. I am just waiting for her to have the taxpayers pay for my house, food and walking around money then I am willing to give up sodas.

Agreed. I'm sure the FDA has people who can define a balanced diet; and I know the stores have the means to differentiate between what is covered by that, and what is not.

How about sunsetting food stamps? If I have to pay for some schlub’s food, housing, healthcare, and cell phone can I at least have them over once a week to mow the lawn? No? Well then how about putting a lifetime limit on benefits? Say 60 months total for WIC, food stamps and housing. Once you have exhausted your bennies, you will either have to get a job or emmigrate to Mexico.

Amen! Rice, corn, and beans, perhaps potatoes. Perhaps a boring diet, but it provides all the nutrients necessary for a healthy diet. That might motivate them to go out and apply themselves.

Here they just go to the ATM, get cash and buy beer or cigarettes with it. How about going back to making them buy good food with them?

Meat, cheese, bread and milk products is ALL these government paid vultures need to get. Absolute essentials. Let’s quit with the “healthy only foods” jazz because it’s based on the BS government food pyramid!
