Remember President Obamas supposedly inviolable pledgerepeatedly uttered during the 2008 campaign and at countless town meetings since the inaugurationthat he would never raise taxes on middle-class citizens who earn $250,000 a year or less?
This morning at a Manhattan breakfast sponsored by Thomson Reuters, White House Budget Director Peter Orszag threw that pledge out the window. Instead, he described Obamas read my lips, no new taxes pledge as a stance and a preference that is subject to study by the presidents newly formed bipartisan Commission on Fiscal Responsibility.
The president has been very clear about what he prefers, Orszag said under questioning from Thomson Reuters Chrystia Freeland. That was his stance during the campaign, and he still believes thats the right course forward. But he has also been very clear that we shall let the commission go do its work.
Freeland followed up, asking if that means the White House might be open to the idea. Perhaps heres some give there?
I dont feel like Im in a position to say that there will be any give there, Orszag parried. But the president has been very clear that the commission should go explore whatever options they all deem to be appropriate.
Later on during the breakfast, Orszag resisted my attempts to pin him down when I asked if the White House could live with a tax increase on the middle class.
No, I didnt say that, he answered. What I did say is look, the typical thing thats going to happen, and its already been happening, is everyone is going to come along with this ideathe value added tax, this thing under $250,000, Social Security, Medicare changes

FOOLS.
Peter Orszag lies like a rug!
How many middle class taxes do we have in the healthcare bill alone?
A 3.8% tax on home sales!! I just wonder where the money goes.
Yeah - don't exhibit any kind of actual "leadership" here, because you might sprain something... just make sure there's cover available when the tax increases magically arrive.
I can hear it from the Zero now: "Well, this bi-partisan commission put a lot of work -- a lot of work -- into this issue, and who am I to second-guess that?"
Anyone who believed that POS deserves what’s coming. Unfortunately, those of us who knew he was full of “ish” will be suffering the same consequences. Really, is anyone surprised by this?
His statement was unequivocal - if you make less than $250,000, NONE of your taxes will go up, payroll, cap gains, income - NONE.
He knew he was lying.
Even in my wildest, most partisan dreams, I wouldn’t have guessed just how pathetic and fast this administration would self-implode. I mean, I knew electing Obama was like sticking a shotgun barrel in the country’s mouth, but I figured they would be slick enough to pull the wool over some eyes until it was too late. As it turns out, they are so completely stupid that we might have a chance (to fire them before the point of no return).
Thanks to 0 and the Dems letting the Bush taxcuts expire this year, you now pay taxes at a higher rate
re: across the board tax increases, VAT, and MEDICARE/SS cuts
the commission will make him do it
he’ll only be following their recommendations
It’s a sad travesty, since if if govt got out of the way, cut taxes and let our economy grow, we could save ourselves
Obama is a lying dogstool. And he has been since he emerged on the political scene.
He surrounds himself with other lying dogstool like Orzag.
May they all rot.
Or “lie.”
I’ve always enjoyed a good old fashioned soft shoe dance routine.
The Progressive Political/Media machine is all ready gearing up to push the idea that tax hikes will "fix the debt crisis" when the faux "Debt Reduction Commission" unveils their "fix" later this year. This is just the latest repeat of the old lie.
In 1986 to Reagan, 1991 to Bush 1 and 1993 to Clinton the Progressives in Congress made the same fraudulent promises. Give us these massive tax hikes now and later we will cut the spending to balance the budget.
We gave them the tax hikes and Federal Spending exploded faster then we could pay for it.
The ONLY time we have gotten a balanced budget in the last 40 years is when the post 1994 election Republican Congress took the public relations hits to actually reign in the spending. Contrary to the Progressive mythology, Bill Clinton's tax hikes did not do that. The last Democrat Congress budget forecast in 1994 forecast $200 billion deficits for the rest of the 1990s.
So this time the response of the American people should be
Look we have heard this lie before. This time we want the spending cuts in place first, then 4 or 5 years down the road, when you have shown you can be responsible with the people's purse, then you can come ask us for tax hikes.
The good news is that every one of his lies is somebody’s last straw.
>> The good news is that every one of his lies is somebodys last straw.
A very good point... well said.
If 0’b is inelegible, many responsible authorities don’t want to face it, that’s treason, plus you get higher taxes to go with it.
Clinton did the same thing using the same number...250k. No one cares and I fully expect the next dem after Obama to promise the same thing using the same number. No one will remember Obama said it, just as no one remembers clinton said it.
Yeah, but he never said we wouldn’t get a VAT tax... :)
Sadly, you are correct.
And of course they know this. It’s all a matter of how they present it. First you increase spending drastically (preferably due to an “emergency”, like health care).
Later on, you start saying things like “our deficit is unsustainable”. Who could argue that’s not true?
Finally, you are “regretably” “forced” to raise taxes.
Rinse and repeat.
