Maurice Strong, Canada, former senior UN official
Maurice Strong became a wealthy man in the oil and utilities industries in Canada before beginning UN service as the Secretary General of the first UN “Earth Summit” in 1972 in Stockholm, and he then became the Executive Director of the new UN Environment Program from 1973&1975. This led to many other significant involvements with UN programmes and funds over the years, and with the World Bank and UNESCO as well.
His most notable further role was as SecretaryGeneral of the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. Mr. Strong has also been a senior adviser to UN SecretaryGenerals over four decades, from U Thant to Kofi Annan.
In the late 1990s, although almost 70 years old, he was onsidered by some as a good prospect to become the next
UN SecretaryGeneral.
Any hope that the UN Secretariat might provide pictures for this “Hall of Shame” is clearly a lost cause. But some current ones can be found at www.un.org/sg, “The team”, or others under the person’s full name plus “UN” at Google, “Search.”

This Hall of Shame entry is a short one, because two analysts have already prepared an up to date and impressively thorough overview of Mr. Strong’s tangled webs of global interests, connections, achievements, intrigues, investments, and advisory roles (please see the article on
Maurice Strong in the IO Watch “Dark Side” feature.)
Mr. Strong is, behind the scenes, probably one of the most influential, enigmatic, and mysterious people in the world. He has been involved in activities in many countries, most recently and extensively in China and North Korea.
The list of his past and present associations, positions, ments runs on and on. He has, for instance, more than 40 honorary n various countries, and many international prizes and awards.

This analysis concentrates on four troubling and damaging aspects of his continual utilization of the UN for his own purposes, taking advantage of its bureaucratic culture of secrecy, its diplomatic immunities, and its global reach.
First, Mr. Strong has firm connections with many people concerned with the UN, including other members of this Hall of Shame, and has been a central figure in a new set of “sort of UN” organizations operating outside normal UN controls (such as they are.)
Mr. Strong was a key reform adviser to Kofi Annan (see the second item below). New UN top manager Alicia Barcena has been a Strong protégé since 1991. Paul Volcker had his own links with Maurice Strong, and while working on a project to sell Canadian nuclear reactors to North Korea, Mr. Strong also worked with a Canadian businessman, Reid Morden, who subsequently served as the operating head of
the Volcker Inquiry into the Iraq Oil for Food programme
scandal (an “independent” group created and defined by Kofi Annan.)
Mr. Strong also helped to bring Mark Malloch Brown, whom he knew from the World Bank, to New York to head the UNDP in 1999. He even worked with Kofi Annan’s son, Kojo, when both were briefly board members of a company called Air Harbour Technologies, put together by the son of Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani, once Saudia Arabia’s powerful oil minister.
Mr. Strong’s efforts also emphasize linkages to multinational corporations, global NGOs, and many special commissions. He has especially worked to create and establish taxpayer funded public bureaucracies including those “sort of” inside the UN, and with complicated in kind donations, odd projects, and accounting complexities not subject to UN oversight which he then taps for funding and contacts when he moves on to other projects.
These include in particular a UN chartered University for Peace; a UN Business Council on Sustainable Development, which in 2000 led to the grand “Global Compact” entwining the UN with multinational corporations; and the Turner Foundation.
That organization started with a year by year, $1 billion total pledge from Ted Turner, slowed somewhat as he encountered “wealth issues”, then strengthened again with additional funds from other sources.
Like the Global Compact, the Turner Foundation is a “UN” program, but a “special” one, not subject to Secretariat or General Assembly oversight, and administered out of the SecretaryGeneral’s office with help from an dvisory Board of the UN Fund for International Partnerships (UNFIP.)
The University for Peace is similar, but sits in splendid isolation in SanJose, Cota Rica,although it does have a Nework office.
Second, Kofi Annan picked Mr. Strong as his senior advisor for major Secretariat management reforms in 1997-1998.
However, Mr. Strong’s reforms did not implement the management accountability framework insisted on by the General Assembly in 1993. Instead, they sought greater powers for the Secretary General rather than the General Assembly, “freed up” UN managers, and launched ambitious new efforts, especially interactions with global business.
These reforms, augmented by more such reforms in 2002, were eventually brought to a halt in 2005.
The Oil for Food inquiry forced the Secretariat to admit to “obvious shortcomings” in Secretariat oversight, accountability, and control mechanisms, and also to admit to a decades old, defective, inadequate top management culture, in Mr. Annan’s “Investing in the UN” report of early 2006.
The General Assembly further reiterated in 2006, as it has ever since 1996, that the Secretariat must implement management accountability processes with “rigorous enforcement – without exception – at all levels”.
It also reaffirmed its oversight role and emphasized the need to “ensure greater accountability of the SecretaryGeneral to Member States.”
Thus, implementation of basic UN management accountability reforms was effectively postponed for a decade by Mr. Annan’s and Mr. Strong’s efforts.

Third, Mr. Strong was directly involved in aspects of the Iraq Oil for Food program scandal. He was forced to step down as Kofi Annan’s special envoy to North Korea in April 2005 because of his long standing financial ties to South Korean businessman Tongsun Park, who had been involved in a major “Koreagate” bribery scandal in the 1970s with various US congressmen.
Mr. Park invested $1 million, from Iraqi authorities seeking to buy influence at the UN, in one of Mr. Strong’s many business ventures (which in this case eventually failed.
A long time friend of Mr. Strong says he is “a brilliant visionary and a shockingly bad administrator.”) Park was convicted, and sentenced to five years in prison in February 2007 and forfeiture of $1.2 million for his “very serious crime” in his oil for food role.
Mr. Strong said he did not know the origins of the funds received. However, he had to give up his special envoy post, because he gave his step daughter a UN job contrary to UN staff regulations about hiring immediate family.

Fourth, and finally, Mr. Strong’s dynamic worldwide career provides a road map to ambitious others, showing how clever and ambitious people can use UN posts as a springboard to linkages with power figures and funding worldwide, that provide many opportunities to “do well while doing good.”
Kofi Annan, with his six figure “special” UN double pension, new mansions, and $160,000 per speech current earnings, is well launched for retirement success and excess, and Mr. Malloch Brown has already achieved a life peerage in the UK, a UN salary and allowances of some $400,000 of his own (briefly) at the UN, close ties with billionaire George Soros, and a ministerial pot in the government of new UK prime minister Gordon Brown, dealing with UN affairs.
However, neither will ever catch up with Mr. Strong. Mr. Strong’s impressive record, unfortunately, encourages other UN top officials to attempt to use their own UN positions to leverage and obtain some very cushy deals and connections and build their future wealth and VIP status.
Unfortunately, such behavior is a grave detriment to a UN which needs dedicated top leadership that, as new SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki moon has said, is “focused like a laser” on implementing real UN management reform, instead of mere self aggrandizement.

Why should Hillary Rodham Clinton worry? Her husband, a former two-term president of the United States, still believes that he has first refusal to the post of secretary-general of the United Nations.
A close friend of Hillary’s, Hungarian-born George Soros, glories in the label “the man who broke the Bank of England” as he spends millions of dollars trying to create the world-state of “Erewhon,” where only a few are more equal than others. Soros already is apologizing for his ideology in a new book aptly called “The Age of Fallibility.”
Which, of course, being educated at the London School of Economics, Soros knows from their squishy socialism that “Erewhon” is an anagram for “Nowhere.”
Another close friend of Hillary’s is Canadian multimillionaire Maurice Strong, a contender with Soros for the title “A Man from Nowhere.” Since 1990, this champagne socialist has mused about a revolution against “industrialized civilizations.”
Let’s remember Strong’s background. About 30 years ago New Yorker magazine described Strong as the person upon whom “the survival of civilization in something like its present form might depend.”
It did not print that Maurice was related to Anna Louise Strong, a Canadian who became Chairman Mao Tse-tung’s close friend and translator.
Since then, Mo has been senior adviser to the secretary-general of the United Nations and — at the same time, but paid from different pockets — senior adviser to the chairman of the World Bank and to the Rockefeller and Rothschild Trusts.
In 1972 and 1992, he was secretary-general of the Earth summits in Stockholm and Rio and chairman of a number of international organizations. He was boss of the U.N. Environmental Program and attended scores of meetings of the world’s political and economic elites. Maurice knew which buttons to press.
But Mo Strong was greedy. He became involved with a number of oil companies — Canada Steamship Lines, the Montreal Power Corp., Molten Metals — and mega-rich Iranian and international arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi.
Sometimes Mo seeks religion. He helped finance a second ark to await the next great flood. He established the Manitou Foundation in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Colorado, which has a smorgasbord of alternative religions, from Zen Buddhism through the Haidakhrndi Universal Ashram to a Vedic temple where he can worship his mother goddess, Vedic. It is said that this is where the Rockefellers, the McNamaras and the Rothschilds conduct their very own pilgrimages in this center for global spirituality.
Nevertheless, Mo and George more often turn to business with one of the Strong fantasies involving “small groups of world leaders gathering together in private conferences, who decide to overthrow the established political and financial principles in order to save the planet.”
Strong is bolder than Hillary and Bill; he tells his sycophants that he is “a socialist in ideology” but “a capitalist in methodology,” which brings into focus that Chairman Mao used more of the Strong family than Anna Louise.
For the last year, however, Maurice has been missing from the United Nations. As a major official, linked to the corruption of the Iraqi oil-for-food scandals, the distinguished Mr. Strong left his usual haunts for his luxury apartment in Beijing’s secluded and secure government compound.
But business still must be done even when you are avoiding the interrogators. All over Asia, George Soros and Maurice Strong are reported as contemplating flooding the U.S. market with Chinese automobiles by the summer of 2007.
Despite a General Motors investigation showing that the Chinese Chery QQ shared “an identical body structure, exterior design, interior design and key components” with the Daewoo’s Matiz, GM still reached a settlement resolving its legal disputes with Chery Automobile.
Chery already is selling in China at about $3,600 and is being exported to Iran, Iraq, Bangladesh, Cuba, Syria and Malaysia. In the United States, Strong and Soros are expected to market the new car at about $20,000.
As of this time, Chery is planning its sales through the New York-based Visionary Vehicles, which, it is said already has the $200 million in escrow from Soros.
Politically, what will a caravan of Chinese autos do to the ailing U.S. vehicle industry when they go on sale at a very competitive price in the months ahead of a presidential election?
Deals will be done between the Democrats and the labor unions of Michigan. Hillary will reach an understanding with the United Auto Workers union so as not to turn Detroit into the Wal-Mart of the auto industry.
The speculation is that either the U.S. Federal Trade Commission will find safety defects in the new product or, as is much more probable, the well-tried Japanese products will be penalized in favor of our “friends” the Chinese as represented by Strong and Soros.
But would you buy a new or a used car from these two guys?

I used to work for Peter B. back in the late 70’s...as soon as you walked into the door of the once small building in Mayfield Hts., were a series of original Andy Warhol’s of Chairman Mao. Very creepy. I will no longer carry Progressive anything. There is a reason why the company is named PROGRESSIVE.

I just found an absolute internet BOATLOAD on this guy, Strong.
And the good thing is, it (they) is not in English and and the materials are NOT from websites in the United States, but overseas.
I am saying no more than that.
I will say, this guy appears to be connected to all kinds of unsavory individuals, governments, cults, and one-world outfits. Quite a character. Good luck sanitizing stuff on his background if that is what the enemy seeks to do. It will be like pissing up a rope. If Glenn Beck ever needs this hard-to-get stuff, I am archiving as we speak. Like I said, here in open forum, I ain't saying ANYMORE than THAT as they will get no leg up from me to start scrubbing this damaging stuff.

Peter Benjamin Lewis.
He likes to brag that in 1974 — during the Vietnam War - he bought Andy Warhol pictures of Mao Tse-tung and hung them in Progressive’s offices. His employees demanded that the pictures of the old monster be taken down. Lewis refused. Thirty years later, the Mao pictures have some value. One hangs in the Progressive boardroom where, maybe, it motivates Lewis’ business ethics.
Lewis has a reported wealth estimated at $3 billion. Progressive Corporation, the fourth-largest auto insurer in North America, employs about 14,000 people with yearly revenues of $8 billion. It is based in Mayfield Village, Ohio. The mogul describes himself as “half screwball, half businessman.” His former wife, Toby Devan Lewis, with whom Lewis remains friends, is curator of Progressive’s art collection.
In 2000, while visiting his daughter on her sheep ranch in New Zealand, Lewis was caught by customs officials with marijuana in his brief case. He was arrested, his yacht searched and his stash discovered. Charged, he admitted the offense to the police, made it clear that he did not want a lawyer and, the next day, pleaded guilty to charges of importing the plant and resin. After spending the night in jail, Lewis, now with a lawyer and having made a massive donation to a local drug-treatment center, was released without a conviction and the case sealed.
Lewis is, by repute, a generous philanthropist. Foundation sources say he gives to art galleries, museums and colleges with abandon, provided that his wishes are carried out promptly.

I don’t know about Lewis, but it is true of Warren buffet in Omaha.
Progressive Insurance is a racket. Lewis figured out how to create a pool of people who had to have insurance because of laws requiring it and charge those bads risks high premiums. In 1994 I had a small accident on snow and bought a Cadillac soon thereafter. When State Farm cancelled me, my agent placed my policy with Progressive. They charged me $900/mo for me and my son. I had to change agents and business insurance to get better rates.
“Nobless Oblige” traditionally expects wealthy people to do philanthropy, but undue political contributions, instead, probably should not be allowed, even though it didn’t seem to do much damage in 2004. Anyone who invests money in the hate-filled MoveOn.org is getting senile. Maybe he should be starved to death.(sarcasm)

Lewis inherited the base of his money. The Lewis fortune came from lumberyards and dry cleaning in Cincinnati, IIRC. His mother’s trust is known as the Jewish Foundation of Greater Cleveland. All the heirs sit on the board. There are several brothers in Peter B’s generation....3? I don’t know for sure. The older generation controls the majority of the money, while their children’s generation has several million each, but, of course, will eventually inherit the rest.
I knew one of his nieces-in-law. Fervent secularist and Green, anti-military and otherwise bored with the life her and her husband’s money affords them.
They all hate all religions, including, interestingly enough, esoteric, new age cults. They do consider themselves superior, intellectually, and the ones I knew are part of the secularist left that tried to appropriate the term *brights*. They give away the money (but keep enough to own several homes each and all the trimmings, including $3k custom-designed toilets) because they are guilty over not earning it themselves. They are convinced no one can become as rich as they are without inside knowledge and connections and want to *provide* for the rest of us so we won’t want to take away theirs. They do have a grudging respect for those who have earned their own way, especially if they are artists.
They hate Bush with passion, which is why I use the past tense in describing our relationship.
The trustfunders don’t pay taxes at the rates we do, as their money isn’t earned income.
The art is part of the superiority. Several of the 40-something generation are professional artists, not that bad (or good), but able to survive because they are rich and have connections. This grates on them.
Personally, I don’t think any of Warhol’s work is *art*. It is clever commercial illustration, IMO. Silkscreening publicly available portraits and product illustration in a variety of colorways is kitsch, not art. Warhol himself knew he was clever, but not really talented, and made fun of art critic pretensions.
The self-hatreds of the super wealthy aren’t something you can figure out rationally. For example, Green Peter owns a converted tugboat that is his personal yacht. It burns 100s of gallons of diesel/hour and even shocks some of the rest of the family.
