More than 22,620 Texas secondary students who stopped showing up for class in 2008 were excluded from the state's dropout statistics because administrators said they were being home-schooled, according to Texas Education Agency figures.
But that's where the scrutiny of this growing population seems to end, leaving some experts convinced that schools are disguising thousands of middle and high school dropouts in this hands-off category.
While home-schooling's popularity has increased, the rate of growth concentrated in Texas' high school population is off the chart: It's nearly tripled in the last decade, including a 24 percent jump in a single year.
That's just ridiculous, said Brian D. Ray, founder of the National Home Education Research Institute. It doesn't sound very believable

Which was well engineered, ofcourse.
The Germans are VERY efficient in marching folks down the planned path.
One of our neighbors a few houses away is homeschooling their daughter. They moved here from California when the daughter was told not to mention God in school. Their kid is smarter than most others her age.
Truancy laws, like child molestation laws, exist for a reason. Not providing a child with a proper education is child abuse.
If parents can provide an appropriate education at home fine. If not, someone else will have to. It is the same as if they could not provide food, clothing, or shelter.
Homeschooled kids don't CONFORM and that creates a problem for the federal system. The government system stopped testing academic achievement years ago and now use ASSESSMNENTS to determine the individuals value to the system. Those who dont fit will be re-educated/trained until they do.
Materials available to homeschoolers make it very possible for parents who dont have a High School diploma or GED,to be teachers.
Compared to today’s 8th graders, your great great grandfather was a college grad.
And good at keeping order in society which is why their response troubles me.
I was homeschooled, and don’t have a diploma or a GED; why shouldn’t I be able to teach my kids at home?
You are placing far too much weight on a high school diploma.
The issue is simply whether the applicable materials have the relevant information for the student to learn, and that the relevant tests/papers adequately assess learning/writing skills.
Also, I believe that I would have been able in about the 6th grade, in my era, to pass my state’s current graduation test. I was looking at an old 6th grade McGuffy book, and I realized that their sixth grade material was probably community college level today.
Sorry, a BA or BS is required in all 50 states. You cannot teach with an associates degree.
Very liberal idea. Laughable too.
Not sure what state you’re in, but in the State of Florida, you can get a teaching job with 60 credit hours of college coursework. You’re right in that they require continuing education and eventually ascension to a Master’s degree, but they allow, essentially, liberal arts majors to teach our kids.
I applied to teach English after I graduated with my BA in the same, and I was told that they had no positions for English but would love to have me on as a math teacher. While I did well in math, I’m not going to teach it. I’m not competent enough to teach it, and the fact that they willingly just hand out positions based on need sends up red flags all over the place.
State of Florida, Pinellas and Hillsborough county will hire with an AA on a contingency contract that you complete your Bachelors in 2 years. I know, I applied and was appalled that was the case.
And it’s an insult that we pay for our children to be indoctrinated by the state.
You'll change your tune when your taxes go to supporting those children when they grow up and go on the dole.
They can also get a medical book on brain surgery. Blind leading the blind
The problem is, you have to have some agent of the state/government determine and enforce the standard,
and those who would seek such positions of authority
will necessarily tend to tyrannical mindsets.
That still reads like a Bachelors is required to me. Actually, it sounds like a concession to a depressed market.

I’ve met home schooled kids and their families all over this country, and as a group they are the finest, most decent human beings you could ever hope to meet. As a rule I can identify them just passing them on the street or in a store or whatever. They have something very special...something that the government indoctrination centers could never reproduce even if that was their intent.
