JACKSON, Miss. — A Mississippi House member has switched from Democrat to Republican.

The Clarion-Ledger reports that Rep. Scott Bounds announced his decision during a news conference Monday at Republican Party Headquarters in Jackson.

Bounds noted his "conservative philosophical and policy beliefs" as the reason for his change.

With Bounds, there will be 50 Republicans in the House, and the chamber will have 72 Democrats.

Bounds is from Philadelphia and has been in the Legislature since 2004.

Maybe he smells the tar and feathers...or maybe napalm?

Whatever, he’s seen the light.

don’t know anything about this guy. What is his voting record? Last thing we need is another John McCain or Arlen Spector.

Sometimes you see a seated congressman switch parties so they can be a member of the majority. It takes a real commitment to core values to switch to the minority party.

If this were the Senate it would be big. This is the house though, and that probably won’t be able to go ever just because Mississippi’s demographics are what they are.

I do have to wonder what this guy’s motivation is. Mississippi House seats are deliberately drawn to produce a Dem majority and the state’s population composition aids this. I get the strangest feeling this could portend a run for statewide office as its become almost impossible to win statewide on the Dem ticket in Mississippi but the lion’s share of courthouses and local offices are still Dem

"It takes a real commitment to core values to switch to the minority party. "

I'll reserve judgment until after we know more about his record as a 'conservative'... but sometimes all it really takes is cowardice to jump from a sinking ship- we've been burned by enough RINO's (remember 1994!!)

Mississippi doesn’t elect the legislature this year so this wouldn’t be an electoral consideration, at least not immediately.

Neshoba is almost a county where almost no one votes in the Republican primary in a state election year, meaning he runs the risk of getting an opponent who can play the good ole boy card on him.

If I had to guess I think he’s going to make a bid at statewide office. Only the heavy hitters will get into whatever race Hood chooses but there are plenty of downballot races this guy could be looking at.

Well, the Democrats have called him a DINO. According to them, he votes with the GOP 92%.

Every time I hear about this type of thing Arlen Spector comes to mind. Instead of thinking someone has finally seen the light, I think of how the socialists are ruining the country by running under a different label.

Seriously, anyone who was still a Democrat after 1980 has some serious mental issues.

Seriously, anyone who was still a Democrat after 1980 has some serious mental issues.

Those mental issues are, namely:

1) Liberal-run education system,
2) Liberal-run news and entertainment industry,
3) (proceeding from 1&2) Poor/nonexistent history education,
4) (...) Poor/nonexistent economics education,
5) Widespread benefits of blood, sweat and tears of those who came before, leading to apathy and laziness. (Many are completely unaware of the price of freedom and prosperity. They believe it "just happens")

This guy Bounds can take a hike.

He remained a Rat after the election of Barack Obama. That is unexcusable.
