Yes, but Cameron actually did have to face an electorate that is indeed further to the left than we have in the US. He lost very few votes to the right parties, with the Left parties together having a majority of voters.
I don't think too many Americanos have any idea as to how far to the Left social attitudes are in the UK compared to the US. Just look at what happened to Hague and Howard when they tried to go Thatcherite.
