20 Things You Will Need To Survive When The Economy Collapses And The Next Great Depression Begins

Michael Snyder

(This is a guest post from The Economic Collapse Blog.)

Today, millions of Americans say that they believe that the United States is on the verge of a major economic collapse and will soon be entering another Great Depression. But only a small percentage of those same people are prepared for that to happen. The sad truth is that the vast majority of Americans would last little more than a month on what they have stored up in their homes.

Most of us are so used to running out to the supermarket or to Wal-Mart for whatever we need that we never even stop to consider what would happen if suddenly we were not able to do that. Already the U.S. economy is starting to stumble about like a drunken frat boy. All it would take for the entire U.S. to resemble New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina would be for a major war, a terror attack, a deadly pandemic or a massive natural disaster to strike at just the right time and push the teetering U.S. economy over the edge. So just how would you survive if you suddenly could not rely on the huge international corporate giants to feed, clothe and supply you and your family? Do you have a plan?

[snip]

Are you prepared?

I remember hearing an interview with some health-safety expert;
he was commenting on the lack of drinkable water in some of the areas hit
by that monster tsunami.

Apparently, some study showed that if you’ve only got ghastly water
to work with, filtering it through about four or five layers of
cotton material (like a T-shirt) will strain out a lot of objectionable
bugs.
I’d never try that unless TOTALLY in a life-or-death situation!!!

I am not mocking anyone. We all have to shuffle off the mortal coil at some point. I am not young, and have chronic ailments that I keep at bay with herbs. Without my herbs, I would be much worse off.

I am sorry for the suffering of people and actually all living entities. Yet, people have to be as self-responsible as they can, and preparing for what may come, as much as one can, is the sane and sensible thing to do.

Death is not a tragedy, it comes to all. How we face death, and who or what we take shelter of at that time, is of paramount importance.

Guy is an idiot.

I would build a fire and using the black coals, sand and dirt, in a tube or bottle might do it.

I would use the cotton to filter what I could first but not in the method you described.

Some how they never point out the one thing that you will really need, other people you can trust.

You should have a group prearranged so when things fall down you know where to go and who to let in. I consider a group of eight healthy adults to be the minimum needed. Add another healthy adult for every three children, disabled or elderly person.

During the time following the recent earthquake in Chile the outgoing president refused to send in the army to maintain order. In the first week there was a lot of looting and lawlessness. By the second week the neighborhoods had organized, set guard patrols and when the signal was given people would pour out of their homes armed with whatever they could find to protect their area.

If you have your group prearranged you can skip the week of unpleasantness and move right into the "beat the looters to a bloody pulp" phase which is far more fun.

The writers left out knowledge and skills before you need them.

Good point. In these kinds of lists, a library is often overlooked. If you have a good survival library, you will have the knowledge you need to survive. In a severe crisis, you will not be able to log onto the net to obtain information. Also, if you have information on your computer, you may not have electricity to run your computer. You need to have the information on paper in your house.

Yes! My mind shuts down at the thought of a total melt-down of society. In addition, I think that’s not a likely as most of the other possible situations. It’s easy enough to die during a catastrophic weather event, and I can’t do everything! Some things I need to leave in God’s hands.

This kind of talk looks sillier and sillier when it increasingly looks like we won’t even have a double dip recession, let alone a depression.

Consider the following decision table.

I'm prepared I'm not prepared
Crisis occurs Outcome=OK Outcome=NOT OK
Crisis does not occur Outcome=OK Outcome=OK

I have 8,000 coffee filters in storage for that purpose. Then after filtering, of course, I will boil it.

And traps. There are trap designs for every type of critter, including the 2 legged fur bearers.

But I can’t imagine cutting up wood without a chain saw.
****************************************************
A bow saw is great to have ... very fast and easy with the blade always in tension ..you don’t need to cut down the whole tree just a few branches a day...

A load of books will not, in and of itself, help one after the SHFT. However, if you actually read them beforehand and master the skills and knowledge contained therein, you will fare better. Books are heavy; I want as few as possible in my ruck while searching for food in the post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Gives me a chuckle...

Yeah, I've heard that, too. It's like the grasshopper expects the ant to take care of him once winter sets in. Except the ant is well armed and not having any of that crap!

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

Disagreeing that there’s no major depression on the horizon doesn’t make me particularly smart. It just looks that way from where we are standing now, that’s all.

True, but you can't learn everything. It's always nice to have reference material.

And you know there is at least one dullard out there who has "What to do when the power fails" saved in his bookmarks on his computer. :)

food prices ARE dramatically up already.....brown sugar for instance....even canned veggies that you used to be able to buy once or twice a year 3 or 4 for a dollar....now its a big "sale" if its 2 for a dollar..

in all this preparing don't forget the salt and the pepper...the vinegar..herbs and spices to liven up the beans and rice we'll all be on...

if the SHTF, the sound of gunfire might bring the authorities...so a bb gun is not a bad idea, but a bow is even better since you can kill an elk with a bow....

"...if the SHTF, the sound of gunfire might bring the authorities..."

When TSHTF, the biggest gun WILL be the authorities.

A bow & arrow is a good idea though. No need to attract anyone, eh?
