U.S. Marines boot recruits with Confederate tattoos
WND ^ | May 04, 2010 | Chelsea Schilling

A widely regarded Southern symbol of pride and states' rights is standing in the way of would-be Marines in their quest to serve their country – a Confederate battle flag. Straight out of high school, one 18-year-old Tennessee man was determined to serve his country as a Marine. His friend said he passed the pre-enlistment tests and physical exams and looked forward with excitement to the day he would ship out to boot camp. But there would be no shouting drill instructors, no rigorous physical training and no action-packed stories for the aspiring Marine to share with his family. Shortly before he was scheduled to leave Nashville for boot camp, the Marine Corps rejected him. Now, the young man, who wishes to remain unnamed and declined to be interviewed, has chosen to return to school and is no longer an aspiring Marine. "I think he just wants to let it go," said former Marine 1st Lt. Gene Andrews, a friend of the man and patriotic Southerner who served in Vietnam from 1968 through 1971. Andrews is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a group of male descendents of Confederate soldiers. He counseled the young man when he decided to become a Marine.

“Just because it symbolizes that for others, does not mean it symbolizes that for everyone.”

Thank you for making a very simple, yet very pertinent statement concerning this issue!

I am married to a Hispanic woman, I have a black son-in-law (soon to be), I have two black brothers-in-law - one of which passed away, and I paid for the head-marker. However, I have a confederate battle flag sticker on my bumper! I am proud of being from the south. I am proud that we stood up to a tyrannical government. THOSE are the things that I am proud of! In the same respect, I am ashamed of the slavery issues and of Jim Crow laws - but those are not the reason I let my colors show!

If you want to know why I show that flag - ask me - I will be more than happy to explain to you the good things of the south!

After taking Okinawa, a Marine unit raised a Confederate battle flag over one of the castles there! The USS Columbia flew a Confederate battle flag, in honor of it’s namesake, the capitol of South Carolina!

I read the policy and Q&A at the link you provided... twice... but I stil can’t find the part that prohibits tattoos of historical American flags on one’s shoulder.

Rules are rules, and especially in the Marine Corps; the rules are expected to be followed.

A few years ago they'd have probably given him a tattoo waiver. But not these days. In this lousy economy, more and more young (and not so young) people are walking into recruitment offices looking for a job. The Marines, like all the branches of the service, are having no trouble filling quotas and, in fact, are turning people away for disqualifiers that were once previously waived. It's tightening up. The armed forces are becoming very selective on who they enlist (and who they allow to reenlist).

The days of the military being that last "fall-back" option as a guaranteed job are over.

I like: “Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms”.

There is a small store near Charles Town, WV (formerly VA), I think it’s along Rt 9, that actually sells all three.

(4) PRIOR TO COMMISSIONING/WARRANT OFFICER APPOINTMENT, OFFICER CANDIDATES WILL BE RESCREENED FOR TATTOOS WHICH ARE NOT IN COMPLIANCE WITH THIS POLICY.

Bottom line - Wait until you get through Boot Camp before you get a tat. One could argue that the flag in question falls into Section A3 - as the Confederate flag is used by White Supremesist groups. Whether he subscribes to their philosophy or not, the Confederate flag is NOT the US Flag. Basically, like all Regulations on the books - if they want to get you, they are gonna get you.

I’m in 100% agreement. A few years ago, this probably would have been overlooked.

But, it appears that people continuously want to push the line - so a line had to be drawn somewhere. How’s the old adage go? Don’t feed the monster. Well, for decades there were either no, or very relaxed tattoo standards; people pushing the envelope have caused the officers to create rules that are very stringent.

Is your defense that this kid was thinking of Okinawa when he got his tatts, so the same rules that apply to everyone else, do not apply to him?

All you have to do is ask any Army, Navy, Marine or Air Force personnel their advice regarding tattoos before going to boot camp. Take your pick - they will all advise against it, if for no other reason - Never, ever ... drawa attention to yourself when you are Boot Camp. Getting the personal attention of the Boot Camp Staff is NEVER a good idea. Never be the best, never be the worst.

Nothing at all wrong with USArmy Infantry. I was there. The uniform isn’t as snazzy but eventually you get to do all the same stuff. I do believe the Marine officers have a better relationship with the troops under them though. They all think of themselves as Marines for one thing.

From what I read it wasn’t the recruiter’s decision. The Marines, and this country, will be in a world of sh*t if all the good Southern boys stop joining.

BTW, the Irish are NOT white Anglo-Saxons.

They aren't even black Anglo-Saxons.

Or even Anglo-Saxons of any color.

These are subtle distinctions that make no difference with the folks who believe first in "good order" and secondly in "individual preferences".

I was surprised that there couldn’t be tats of naked (or partially clad) women.

I know several old soldiers and sailors with a provocative “Lucy” or “Sue” keeping them company on their forearms.

I also seem to remember that the guys would paint lovely ladies on their airplanes in WWII.

Now it’s considered sexist. Look out! It may offend a feminist.
