DENVER Former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge says he's uncomfortable with Arizona's new immigration law, saying it allows police to question people without probable cause.
But Ridge also faults both major parties for failing to come up with a national policy and opening the door for state laws like Arizona's.
Ridge spoke Tuesday in an interview with The Associated Press in Denver before appearing at a public discussion on terrorism.
He says Congress should "legitimize" the status of the 12 million illegal immigrants in the country but not grant them citizenship.
He also advocates "brutal" penalties for employers who hire illegal workers and says the U.S. should push Mexico to help control immigration.

This bill is a great litmus test for RINO-ness.
RINO RINO RINO
Yup. Tom Ridge is a stinking RINO.
F you Tom, where were you for the last eight years you f’ing RINO?
Hey Ridge; I ain’t paying $12,000 a month anymore for an illegal mom and her 8 children.
They need to go home.
What's worse? People getting killed by illegals and the burden they are putting on taxpayers or cops being allowed to ask a question with reasonable suspicion? If Ridge thinks the latter, he's an embarrassment.
****ing sissy GOP making me want to puke.
Boy, this 12 million figure has been static now for how many years? Using this number is code for "I'm a lib."
Guess no one has crossed the border illegally since 2004? Must be that fence, huh?
“Former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge says he’s uncomfortable with Arizona’s new immigration law, saying it allows police to question people without probable cause.”
You buffoon! Police have NEVER needed “probable cause” to question people (and expect their cooperation).
I suppose this means Ridge thinks cops can pull people over for “driving while Mexican-looking.” Where’d he hear that, the New York Times? Does it even matter that it’s completely false? Sounds scary enough, which is the whole point of the current national discussion.
Never been a fan of this guy.
Ridge is a dork.
It is my understanding that police in Arizona are specifically prohibited from asking about legal residency unless the person in question is being checked out for another reason, i. e., “probable cause.” They are specifically enjoined from approaching someone and “demanding to see their papers.” Anyone who says otherwise hyas either never read the legislation or is lying.
Yup. There has to be a “legal contact” situation already between the cop and the suspected illegal.
None of these people mouthing off know what they are talking about.
Is anybody keeping track of these RINO losers on the Arizona Illegal Immigration bill?

I believe the standard is lawful contact, not “probable cause.” You need probable cuase, for instance, to pull a car over. But not to speak to someone. Let’s say a cop is called in to investigate a “domestic situation,” or something. You don’t need probable cause to conduct an interview. It would be in such a situation that a cop would be free to ask a person if they could provide them with proof of citizenship.
