The former congressman, who's still running a strong primary race against Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), explains his position on local legislation to require proof of citizenship from presidential candidates.
We now require voters to offer proof that voters are who they say they are. If we're asking that of voters, shouldn't we ask candidates for every office on the ballot to be able to offer proof that they are who they say they are?
As the headline says, he doesn't think the current legislation goes far enough. That's more or less what Hayworth spokesman Jason Rose told me back in March, when the McCain campaign started hitting him on this.
It should apply to anyone seeking any office. When J.D. goes to the polls he has to provide an ID, so why have a different, lesser, standard for this office?

I like JD but he will kookify himself real bad if he doesn’t ditch the “birther” silliness.
GO JD!!
I think McCain had to show his birth certificate.
Where’s the long form, Obama?
Nothing silly about a state actually verifying eligibility, the AZ law that JD supports. Because, lo and behold, not a soul verified the Kenyan’s credentials. Not one Sec or State, not one governor, not one elections board, not one democrat, not one GOPer, not the Congress and not the electoral college. Imagine that.
There’s nothing wrong with “trust, but verify.”
It was good enough for Reagan, why isn’t it good enough for you?
NBC Ping
Failure to provide the document if Congress requests it could be an impeachable offense...After the November elections, of course.
A new after-birther arrives.
JD is awesome.
The WA Post is trying to save McCain. Every day a story by a lib paper smearing JD.
Absolutely, J.D., I’m with you-what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Why shouldn’t the political leaders of this nation have to prove their citizenship? Obama should have had to, too. And, I guarantee you, ultimately, it will be disclosed that Obama is not a natural born US citizen and the people who enabled this fraud to be elected should be hanged, every damned last one of them. There should be public trials by We, the people, rather than Congress because we know Congress is not capable of doing the job. We’ve got to clean up the government thereby cleaning up the country and rectifying the path we’re on; and, We, the People, are the only ones who can do it.
Wonder what Obama would do if stopped by Sheriff Joe in Maricopa County and asked to show proof of citizenship?
The Obama Enablers are probably going apolplectic! Hayworth supporting the Birther bill is good news.
The only people who will criticize Hayworth for his stand are those who sit back and let Obama get away without proving his actual birth location. The Obama Enablers in both parties are clueless
So, Hayworth's reasoning that public officials should be at least to the same standard's as voters is fringe, according to David Weigel, the WP expert on the conservative movement.
Weigel's expertise on conservatives might be compared to occupants of the helicopter viewing the undiscovered Amazon tribe. "Look at those funny people down there. They must be angry. I wonder why they are shooting arrows?"
I like JD but he will kookify himself real bad if he doesnt ditch the birther silliness.
Oh God....more Obama Enabler nonsense.
I doubt Hayworth will lose support for asking for Obama’s BC....liberals were not going to vote for him anyway
