A five-minute colon cancer test could reduce the number of deaths from the disease by about 40 percent, a new study says.
British researchers followed more than 170,000 people for about 11 years. Of those, more than 40,000 had a "flexi-scope" test, an exam that removes polyps, small growths that could become cancerous.
The test involves having a pen-sized tube inserted into the colon so doctors can identify and remove small polyps. Researchers used the test on people in their 50s. In the U.K., government-funded colon cancer screening doesn't start until age 60.
Researchers compared those results to more than 113,000 people who were not screened. They found the flexi-scope test reduced peoples' chances of getting colon cancer by one third. It also cut their chances of dying by 43 percent. Researchers said the test needed to be done just once in a person's lifetime.

I hate the prep but I would rather be alive than worry about what goes on the day before..Maybe we should explain what we are talking about when we say the day before.I'll let you do that..LOL!

I was appalled that people 60-74 in the UK are given fecal blood tests only every other year under their vaunted health care system. That test should be done annually after age 50. I lost my Mother to colon cancer and our family history indicates a likely colon cancer gene. As a result I started getting my colonoscopies in my 40’s. I suppose under Obamacare like in the UK I wouldn’t have that option regardless of my increased risk.

My pastor’s wife was told right after she turned 50 that she had reached the age that she should start getting colonoscopies. She went in for what she thought would be a routine procedure. They found a golf-ball sized tumor. It was removed, she underwent chemotherapy, and right now is considered disease free. Had she gone untreated she would never have seen her 60th birthday.

The doc noted a polyp, so at that point I had to schedule the full blown colonoscopy. They can't remove polyps during the Sigmoid, as you know.

Mine was lots more than that..I had to drink a gallon this awful stuff until all gone..And yes I brought a cot to the bathroom..
I have a colonoscopy every two years. The two minutes of bliss right before you go under is best part. Heck, I'd have one every year if they'd let me.
If this is your first go-round, consider my advice (learned the hard way)....when you get up tomorrow and slug down the last of the phosphate for the final blowout, stop drinking water after the 'clearance' takes place.
The time before last, I kept drinking water try and quell the starvation - but the result was that would force me to sh*t again......I damned near needed diapers on the trip to the hospital.
Unfortunately I have a kink in my back colon (my liberal wife said said it was from being a tight assed conservative) and had to undergo a barium enema in addition to the colonoscopy. Without going into details just say you check your dignity at the door when you have a barium enema done.
Colonoscopy are important . My fathers colon cancer could have been caught earlier if he had one. But the tests do carry risks. A relative and a neighbor both died from one. The last on I had the person just before me was rushed to emergency after the colon wall was perforated. That’s what happened to the ones that died.
Yes,if I could sleep that good every night I would feel great all of the time..

Still, IMHO if I can put off "the day before" by 2 yrs with the Coloscopy, instead of going through the ordeal every 5 yrs - I'll gladly do it.
I did the Fleet, too. But I think that is the same prep my wife had for the full colonoscopy. The preps are different for the two procedures?
Around these parts, yes....for the Sigmoid just a nasty enema; for the Full Monty, starve the day before and drink the phosphate the night before and then the morning of the procedure with the goal of sh*tting your brains out.
