(CNN) -- With her signature Friday on Senate Bill 1070, Gov. Jan Brewer launched Arizona into a maelstrom of national controversy, community conflict and extreme fiscal risk.
In doing so, she failed a basic test of courageous leadership -- recognizing and acting responsibly when political symbolism and populist pandering crosses into dangerous policy. The governor should have known better, if only because recent history demonstrates the folly in enacting measures like Arizona's SB 1070.
SB 1070 will be subject to multiple legal challenges, and the state will devote precious resources to defend a law that has so many serious constitutional flaws that it will likely never be implemented. The neighboring state of California faced this circumstance 15 years ago when Gov. Pete Wilson championed Proposition 187, enacted by voters in November 1994.

Are the feds admitting that it’s a sanctuary country? As Mark Levin said, this bill codifies and demands that the state of AZ do what the Federal immigration laws state. If the federal government got tough on immigration, it’s not as if they would have federal agents in each of the 50 states dealing with the illegals. The state would still be dealing with it either way.
Too bad the feds don’t recognize the US as a sovereign nation with sovereign borders.
The idea that only Feds can arrest and/or stop illegals is ridiculous. Illegals are criminals!! Period!!
Remind me again why many white people run around in circles over race? Why don't you cram it Mr MALDEF.

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.
And it’s supposedly the cop’s job to protect me.
And the old phrase “when seconds count, the cops are only minutes away”.
When intellect and honesty counts, our congress-critters are only a light year away.
Hey Thomas A. Saenz why don’t you take the race card and shove it up where the sun does not shine.
Golly-what is a State to do when invaders are killing its citizens and bringing drugs into the state and the FEDS refuse to uphold the constitution and PROTECT the United States.
WOW! Did you make that up?
if a state enacts a state law parallel to federal law against illegal aliens, they will crush them???
Brewer has bigger COJONES than Soetoro, Reid, Schumer, Dodd, Biden, Durbin, Levin, and Holder. The limp wristed ‘Rats are more effeminate than Lindshay Gwaham.
Notice how the commentators on TV and in Congress are nashing their teeth on how this AZ bill will affect illegals. Do they care about the Americans who pay the bill for the illegal’s education, health care, housing-— and what about crimes committed against American citizens These jokers never talk about the cost to Americans.
Guilty....thanks.
You are exactly correct. I have been listening to Levin myself. I was amazed to hear him say that he had determined that all Arizona did was write a bill TO ENFORCE THE FEDERAL LAWS.
I was stunned.
But .. the Nazi remarks are way off the charts - and what people don’t seem to realize is that the Jewish people were GERMAN CITIZENS .. while the ILLEGALS are NOT AMERICAN CITIZENS .. so the premise is all wrong.
If you want to come here legally, we will welcome you, but you had better come through the front door and not be sneaking in the back way. You had better have a job or way (legal way) of supporting yourself because we can no longer afford to support you.
Well, there's that and the fact that kicking someone out of the country does not compare to putting them in ovens.
There is no difference between Democrats, the DNC media whores, and Al Qaida.
